Job description

The University of Passau owes its strong visibility and good repute to excellent research, innovative teaching and its tight-knit international academic networks. Some 11,000 students from 100 countries and more than 1,300 staff study and work on our university campus, which is located a stone's throw from the historical Old Town of Passau and combines state-of-the-art technical infrastructure with award-winning architecture. Internationally successful high-tech companies and a vibrant start-up scene, coupled with a rich culture and Lower Bavarian traditions, give Passau and the surrounding area a special appeal that makes it a great place to live and work.
The Chair of Multilingual Computational Linguistics at the University of Passau was newly established. Professor Johann-Mattis List has led the chair since 1 January 2023. One of the concrete goals of the chair for the next five years is to assemble a team that represents Multilingual Computational Linguistics in its breadth, which may well go beyond the current focus of the chair. In this context, we are seeking an
Assistant Professor (Akademischer Rat / Akademische Rätin auf Zeit)
to start on 17 February 2025 . This is a fixed-term position with a three-year contract, which can be extended by an additional three years following a positive evaluation. To be considered for the position, a doctorate in computer science or computational linguistics or general/comparative linguistics is required, as is advanced knowledge of empirical research approaches in linguistics. We welcome applications from candidates with various possible profiles (e.g. psycholinguistics, cognitive science, computational linguistics, linguistic typology, or historical linguistics); however, they must have a cross-linguistic focus. Remuneration is in accordance with pay grade A13 of the German civil service wage scale. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to write his or her habilitation thesis while employed at the chair.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach classes on multilingual computational linguistics (5 contact teaching hours per week during the semester).
Conduct research on relevant topics of multilingual computational linguistics, with a special focus in psycholinguistics, cognitive science, computational linguistics, linguistic typology or historical linguistics.
Assist the chair in building its teaching portfolio.
Assist and supervise colleagues at the chair and other collaborating chairs on matters of research (organise workshops, train up student assistants).

Person Specification

Must have a doctorate in computer science, computational linguistics or general linguistics/comparative linguistics as well as extended knowledge in empirical research with a focus on cross-linguistic approaches.
Must be ready and willing to advise students and colleagues from the University of Passau and from other collaborating institutions on programming questions and to organise regular courses for students and colleagues at the University.
Good programming skills, specifically in Python, would be a distinct advantage. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to learn and help improve the software being developed at our chair.
Very good knowledge of spoken and written English and German is required.
The University of Passau wishes to increase the proportion of its female staff and expressly encourages women to apply for the position. Job-sharing arrangements may be possible, depending on the number of suitable candidates. This position is suitable for candidates with disabilities. Those who are registered disabled are given preference over non-disabled applicants who do not otherwise have statutory preferential status if their overall personal aptitudes, skills and qualifications are equal.
Applications will be accepted until 20 November 2024 .
