Job description

Institution The Bundeswehr guarantees the security, sovereignty, and foreign policy capability of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, it protects citizens, supports allies, and provides administrative assistance in the event of natural disasters and severe accidents at home. In doing so, it is subject to the decisions of the Bundestag, the German Basic Law, and international law. Department The Institute of Radiobiology of the German Armed Forces (InstRadBioBw) in Munich is a departmental research institute of the German Federal Government. It conducts defense medical research and development in the field of medical management against radioactive substances as well as ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The tendered project will occur in close cooperation between our Institute and the University Hospital Eppendorf, Hamburg. Employment location and working location Employement location: Ernst-von-Bergmann Kaserne, Neuherbergstraße 11, 80937 München Working location: UKE (Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf), Martinistraße 52, 20251 Hamburg You will be working on a third-party-funded consortium project dealing with improvements in diagnosis of radiation-induced acute health effects. The part you are involved aims to convert cytogenetic measurements into clinically relevant information. Other than usually, in this project, cytogenetic measurements are not used for individual radiation exposure estimation (no biodosimetry) but clinically relevant patient groups (unexposed, yes/no hospitalization) will be predicted. Based on that diagnostic tool clinicians shall be able to better decide early after radiation exposure about the medical management of radiation exposed individuals who later might become severely sick. After consultation with a doctor, you are supposed to collect venous blood from patients. Based on a lymphocyte cell count you will divide the whole blood into aliquots and cryopreserve it following a certain protocol. These data including the number of aliquots will be documented. After consultation with the project coordinator you will be responsible for collecting clinical (e.g., diseases), demographic (e.g., age, gender) and social habits data (e.g., alcohol consumption, smoking) from healthy donors and patients. Data will be stored in a secured database. From that database, anonymized data will be extracted and copied into an Excel sheet, which provides the link to eight European cytogenetic labs who require the frozen whole blood aliquots for cytogenetic measurements. These data are also later required for data analysis. After discussions with the coordinator of the project, you will send the frozen samples to these cytogenetic laboratories. The position is available at 01.01.2025. You have successfully completed a Medical Assistant degree or something comparable. You are able to work both independently and in an international team. You are able to store data structured and logically so that they can be easily examined at a later time point. You do have good communication skills. Agreement to participate in a health suitability assessment. Initiation of the mandatory security clearance level Ü2. Optional You have knowledge or interest in cytogenetic measurements. You will be hired into a fixed-term employment contract, according to the so-called "Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz" (academic contract law). You can expect a salary (E5, 100%), measured according to the collective agreement of the public service (TVöD). You will work for an acknowledged and family-friendly employer in secure economic circumstances. The Bundeswehr promotes the compatibility of family, health care, and career, for example, via remote work or part-time employment. The occupation can be part-time. You will work in a dedicated and experienced team with modern laboratory equipment. Remarks: The employment is initially limited until December 31, 2026. The classification is made in accordance with 12 of the TVöD with regard to the actual activities to be performed on a more than temporary basis and fulfillment of the personal and collective agreement requirements. Our research project is meaningful, as you will be involved in developing modern diagnostic tools for managing life-threatening acute radiation injuries, making a relevant contribution in scientific, social, and political dimensions. The Bundeswehr promotes professional equality between women and men and, therefore, particularly welcomes applications from women. By the Social Code IX and the Disability Equality Act, we expressly welcome applications from severely disabled persons; individual consideration is given with regard to the fulfillment of the tender requirements. The Bundeswehr supports the goals of the National Integration Plan and welcomes applications from people with a migration background.
