Job description

Progress Teachers are seeking to recruit a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with students who have SEMH needs, providing tailored support to help them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential. This role requires a proactive individual with excellent communication skills, a strong understanding of SEMH challenges, and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Assist in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans (BSPs) under the guidance of the SENCO and class teacher.
  • Support students in developing coping strategies and social skills to manage their emotions and behaviour effectively.
  • Help create a safe and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and understood.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, ideally within an educational or care setting.
  • Strong understanding of SEMH challenges and strategies to support students effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach to working with vulnerable students.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage challenging behaviour in a supportive and constructive manner.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in education, child development, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a residential or special educational needs (SEN) environment.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies.
  • First Aid certification.
