An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and confident Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) specialist to lead and develop the Novus Learning Support provision at HMP Deerbolt on a fixed term, full-time (37 hours per week) basis. The fixed-term duration is 4 months and will be reviewed in March 25.

What the role entails
The purpose of this role is to support function to the Prison Education Framework Lot, undertaking research into Special Educational Needs (SEN) and LDD, maintaining knowledge and application of government policy and developments within SEN and LDD and provide support, training and guidance to all staff working with learners with LDD to ensure that learners' needs are met throughout their learner journey.

Our aim is to empower learners with learning difficulties and disabilities to engage, enjoy and make progress in learning in custody, and prepare them to continue to make progress in the community upon release.

Our About You philosophy supports our delivery focus on individual learning needs, personal requirements and recognises previous experiences and skills of all learners including those with learning difficulties and disabilities.
We will support our learners with learning difficulties and disabilities to:

  • Achieve a parity of outcomes with their peers.
  • Engage and make progress in learning.
  • Make positive choices and exert control over their learning and progression.
  • Engage with organisations who can provide support on release.

What we need from you
In order to be successful in the role of SENCO, you will need:

  • Degree or equivalent or significant experience in the field of SEN
  • Hold an SEN qualification at Level 5 (new standards) or above (or make commitment to achieve within an agreed timescale)
  • Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Significant experience within the field of learning difficulties and disabilities in adults
  • Proven track record of implementing strategy and policy relating to learning difficulties and disabilities.
  • Significant experience of providing training, guidance and support to delivery staff
  • Track record of using data to monitor, evaluate and influence course developments.
