Job description
About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Regional Support Officer with Trade Union experience to join the BMA London regional team.
Initially, the role will be predominantly case work focussed, representing doctors through HR processes and on all manner of employment matters including high risk disciplinary procedures.
However, as we continue our journey to becoming a fighting and organising union, and when operational circumstances allow, the successful candidate's case work will reduce, and they will support the work of the regional team in carrying out the 'Five Pillar's strategy' with specific reference to representing members, negotiations, supporting and organising reps, campaigning, and recruitment.
The role may include supporting Local Negotiating Committees and/or a regional branch of practice committee as well as individual and collective casework.
The successful candidate will work closely with relevant BMA staff and BMA reps and will have transferrable skills or knowledge which can be applied to negotiating, representing, campaigning, and organising within a trade union.
To be successful as a Regional Support Officer you'll have:
- Up to date and in-depth expert knowledge of industrial relations, employment law, HR policies, procedures and good practice
- Ability to gather and evaluate information and develop strategies for dealing with complex negotiations, cases or campaigns
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with BMA colleagues and members
- Knowledge of NHS structures and an understanding of the key issues facing the medical profession locally
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage a demanding workload and manage your own diary
- Excellent negotiating, influencing and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in dealing with varying situations
This role is home- based and the successful applicant will be required to travel across the London region in order to carry out the role, and therefore living in or within reasonable travelling distance of the capital is required.
