Teacher of Mathematics - QTS - Fixed Term - Maternity Cover - January 2025 start!
Role: Teacher of Mathematics
Pay: MPS/UPS (Outer London)
Contract: Fixed-Term/Long-Term - full time or part time - term time only
Start Date: January 2025
The vacancy is for a Maternity Cover post, from January 2025 and can be either full-time or part-time.
Over 300 of our students study Mathematics in the Sixth Form, of whom 130 take Further Mathematics. The Department is renowned as one of the best in the country. Our young mathematicians have in recent years been crowned champions in the prestigious UK Maths Team Challenge and the Hans Woyda competition, they excel in individual competitions such as the British Maths Olympiad and many go on to read Mathematics at top Universities.
The School is proud of its large and vibrant Maths Department who are all passionate about their subject and help ensure every boy achieves to the best of his ability. In this academically selective school, the challenges include stretching the most able up to Oxbridge level, therefore the ability to teach Mathematics up to and including Further Mathematics and Oxbridge entrance with confidence is desirable but not essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach up to 30 (40 minute) lessons per week, which would usually include a games afternoon and a form tutor period.
A contribution to the wider life of the School is also expected from staff and Teachers may be responsible to other colleagues in their work, (e.g. a Form Tutor will have the Head of Year as their immediate line manager for pastoral work).

About the Mathematics Department - Teacher of Mathematics
Due to the popularity of the subject in Sixth Form, along with the number of pupils taking Further Maths, we have a staff of 24 teachers, who are all passionate about their subject. The Hampton Maths department is one of the biggest in the country, and our collective goal is to help each individual reach their potential. There is a broad mix of experienced teachers and those nearer the beginning of their careers.
The Department has a strong team feeling, with staff fully involved in developing policy and taking responsibility for various areas of the Mathematics curriculum and the running of the Department.
Sixth Form Mathematics
There are currently over 300 students taking Mathematics in the Sixth Form in 20 AS or A Level sets and 13 Further Mathematics sets.
Exam Results
In 2024, 95% of pupils achieved 8/9 (A ) grades at IGCSE Mathematics, 79% achieved A/A at A Level and 78% achieved A/A in Further Mathematics.
Mathematics at Key Stages 3 and 4
Mathematics is taught in Form groups in the First and Second Years. These groups are mixed ability (within the narrow limits of the selective nature of the intake). Extension and support classes supplement the provision.
There is semi-setting in the Third Year and full setting in the Fourth and Fifth Years. Eleven sets will take Edexcel IGCSE. The top six sets will also take AQA Level 2 Further Maths.
Accommodation and ICT
There is a large departmental office, with work areas, suitable reference books, teaching materials and supplies of examination papers and worksheets. All classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards and all teachers are provided with a laptop.

Essential Criteria:
• Commitment to the paramount importance of the safeguarding and wellbeing of pupils
• A good honours degree in Mathematics from a leading university
• An enthusiastic commitment to all aspects of the Mathematics programmes of academic and cocurricular activities across the age range
• A teaching qualification and previous teaching experience
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office) including the use of appropriate online platforms for remote learning and the ability to embrace the use of technology in the classroom (All teaching staff are supplied with a laptop computer)
• The ability to demonstrate characteristics of outstanding teaching practice
• An awareness of the demands of teaching bright students and a commitment to fostering high
academic achievement in an academically selective school setting
• The ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a large team
• A professional, collaborative approach that inspires confidence in pupils, parents and colleagues
• Calmness and efficiency, with the ability to work under pressure when required to do so
• Commitment to continuing professional development through attendance at INSET courses
• A keen eye for detail and a high level of administrative ability
• Willingness to contribute to the rich programme of co-curricular departmental activities and
competitions
• Assiduous and willing to avoid the '9 to 4 approach'
• Commitment to the all-round ethos of the School, including its co-curricular activities and
pastoral approach
• A willingness to organise and lead Mathematics day visits and residential trips
• An understanding of appropriate Health and Safety requirements.
Desirable Criteria
• A higher degree or experience of educational/subject-specific research
• The ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with all members of the School
community and outside agencies
• Experience of external examining
• Experience of preparing pupils for Oxbridge entrance
• Knowledge of the requirements of the Independent School Inspectorate in terms of teaching, learning and assessment.
