Job description

ADAS Ltd, a member of RSK Group Ltd have vacancies for Assistant Field Research Scientist - Industrial Placement Students, looking to gain knowledge and experience in a research environment. Placements will be full time for a period of 1 year, preferably commencing in June/July 2025. This mixed practical hands-on role, working both outside and in the office, can be based from ADAS Boxworth, Cambridgeshire, ADAS Gleadthorpe, Nottinghamshire, ADAS High Mowthorpe, North Yorkshire or ADAS Rosemaund, Herefordshire.

Due to the seasonal nature of the work a flexible approach is needed, as there will be a requirement to work overtime (evenings and weekends) during busy periods to ensure scientific objectives are met, and delivery within suitable weather conditions are optimized. An option to extend contracts through July and August 2026 will also be given. Six-month placements that cover March/April to Sept/Oct would also be considered.

ADAS provide expert solutions and policy advice on agricultural and environmental issues. Our Sustainable Agricultural Solutions Business carry out a wide range of technical field, glasshouse and laboratory studies in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops, specialising in Crop Pathology, Physiology, Soils and Nutrition, Entomology and Weeds.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with marking out and preparation of study sites in the field to protocol requirements
  • Assist with observations/assessments such as monitoring and identifying invertebrates, diseases and weeds
  • Sampling, preparation and processing of plant, soil and water samples
  • Carry out work as described in SOPs and protocols such as treatment applications, agronomic and crop damage scores
  • Assist with the delivery of working to contracts such as harvesting of plots, compilation and collation of results
  • Assist with the application of plant protection products on to trial plots, under the supervision of qualified members of staff

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Have a clear and demonstrable knowledge of agricultural and scientific practices, contributing to the running and management of field and glasshouse experiments
  • Deliver work in a meticulous and methodical manner following SOPs and protocols
  • Manage time effectively in order to meet deadlines
  • Work flexibly and demonstrate an enthusiasm for working outside
  • Communicate effectively in a small team environment
  • Full UK Driving Licence
