Job description

Collections Trust has a unique place in the museum landscape and a distinctive mission: to help museums work with the information that connects audiences and collections. Every Accredited museum in the UK uses our collections management standard, Spectrum , as do many others around the world. And having helped to found the Museum Data Service , we've an exciting few years ahead as we use it to transform the way we all work with museum collections.

As our current Chief Executive prepares to step down after nearly ten years in the role, we are looking for a proven leader, with deep experience and understanding of the UK museum and heritage sector, to take the helm. The Chief Executive is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the charity, working closely with the board of trustees, staff, and stakeholders. The role is pivotal in shaping the future of Collections Trust, ensuring we continue to develop as a dynamic, ambitious sector support organisation, valued around the world as a leader in collections management standards and advice.

Note that Collections Trust no longer has a central office, and all staff work remotely from home. However, the Chief Executive will need to be based in, and have the right to work in, the UK.

We're looking for someone with these essential knowledge, skills and qualities:

  • Significant experience in a leadership or senior management role, leading and managing a small, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Deep understanding and experience of the public museum and heritage sector.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with organisational goals and adapt to a changing external environment.
  • A successful track record in securing funding - from sources including public bodies, trusts, foundations, and commercial opportunities - and of collaborative partnership working.
  • Experience in managing organisational budgets, overseeing financial performance, and ensuring long-term financial sustainability, ideally within a charity context.
  • Demonstrable advocacy experience, with the communication and interpersonal skills to engage and influence at a senior level across the sector.
