Deputy Director

Location: Remote within the UK

Salary: from £74,444

Status: Permanent; full-time

Benefits: 3% employer pension contribution, Employee Assistance Programme, consideration of flexible working requirements and work/workplace adjustments where required

About Us

Uplift is a high-impact campaigning and research organisation helping to move the UK towards a fossil fuel-free future.

We are currently looking for a Deputy Director to join the leadership of our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity to help build an ambitious movement for a just transition away from oil and gas in the UK.

The Role

The Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director and COO of Uplift to ensure that we have the strategy, resources, organisational tools, and culture to fulfil Uplift s ambitious mission and to thrive as an organisation. In all their work and relationships, the Deputy Director will reflect Uplift s core values and principles, which include collaboration, strategic boldness, and a commitment to climate justice.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership and strategy

Act as a strategic partner to the Executive Director, supporting the articulation of and delivery of Uplift s overall strategy and thought leadership.

Support the development of effective programme management approaches across Uplift s teams, together with Uplift s Senior Management Team, including through strategic planning and alignment.

Build senior strategic partnerships across the climate and energy sector to support the delivery of our collective goals.

Lead on the development and implementation of Uplift s approach to monitoring, evaluation and learning.

Represent Uplift in key spaces, including public-facing engagements and media.

2. Financial strategy and fundraising

With the Executive Director and COO, support the development of Uplift s financial strategy, ensuring a sustainable funding model.

Support the Executive Director and COO with funder engagement, relationships and reporting.

Support the development of programme budgets that are aligned with the overall organisational strategy.

3. Operations, governance and management

With the Executive Director and COO, ensure that key strategic and operational risks are identified, monitored and mitigated.

Support the COO to ensure that Uplift has effective organisational and operational policies and processes.

Support the COO and Executive Director to develop Uplift s governance and ensure that it is fit for purpose.

Line manage and provide professional guidance and support to staff.

Experience of designing and implementing programme monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

Outstanding communication skills able to present information and arguments clearly and concisely.

3. Financial strategy

Experience of developing financial strategy in a not-for-profit environment and a track record of delivering financial sustainability.

Experience of financial management, both at a strategic and day-to-day level.

Experience of managing relationships with funders.

4. Operations and Governance

A strategic approach to operations and the ability to streamline processes and adapt them to the needs of a dynamic organisation.

A people-centred manager, committed to creating an empowering culture.

Experience of supporting others to succeed and an ability to build trust and influence across the organisation.

Experience of recruitment and team development

Knowledge of good practice in non-profit governance.

Experience with facilitation and/or coaching.
