Media Relations Manager (Maternity Cover)
Reference: OCT
Location: Flexible in UK
Salary: £43,095.00 - £46,264.00 Per Annum
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
Contract: 12 months fixed-term Maternity cover

Our client, a leading nature conservation charity are looking for an individual who is both passionate about nature conservation and has the drive, ambition and know-how to make a significant impact in the outside world. This is an exciting and rarely available opportunity for someone with solid media relations experience, a great understanding of the UK national media landscape, good judgement, political nous, and strong relationships with media.

What's the role about?

The Media Relations Manager is responsible for managing the charity's relationship with UK national media in order to enhance and protect their external reputation and to secure media coverage that promotes and defends the objectives of the charity. The post-holder will provide strategic and tactical counsel to senior staff, to ensure that media issues and activities are managed and delivered appropriately and effectively, to minimise organisational risk and maximise the achievement of objectives.

The successful candidate will be intellectually curious, collaborative, resilient and passionate about adapting to new trends and situations. You'll be comfortable working in a fast-moving culture, collaborating as partners with colleagues across the charity and in external organisations in pursuit of their common goal to drive change in the world.

This is a maternity cover role so it's highly desirable that applicants have experience of fixed-term contracts in large, complicated organisations and are willing and able to hit the ground running and learn quickly while doing.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • High levels of media relations knowledge, as demonstrated by work successes and examples of coverage achieved.
  • The approach required to cultivate and pitch to journalists; how to write a media strategy that will help secure coverage for key projects in media outlets that can communicate key messages to priority target audiences.
  • Able to communicate complex topics in a clear manner at all levels to develop shared understanding.
  • Judgement and decision-making: Able to define and clarify a complex situation through gathering facts and evidence, evaluating risks and options and making a justifiable decision, to progress work.
  • Able to motivate, inspire and build respect internally, externally across a broad range of stakeholders, and at all levels.
  • Strong social and interpersonal skills, with the gravitas to influence internal and external stakeholders, including journalists.
  • Proven intellectual and strategic ability. Able to interpret the media and political landscape.
  • Excellent planning and prioritisation skills. The ability to meet tight deadlines and handle unanticipated workloads.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning, managing and delivering media coverage in support of major projects, campaigns and initiatives.
  • Experience of developing and implementing strategies for identifying and influencing media contacts.
  • Experience of writing press releases and other media materials, including briefings for senior staff.
  • Experience of issues/crisis management and the development of crisis communications plans.
  • An acute awareness of the political landscape in the UK; be interested and knowledgeable in environmental issues, and be able to demonstrate and apply these interests to your work

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of working in the charity sector.
  • A relevant degree or qualification.
  • Experience of doing a maternity cover or fixed-term contract in a large, complicated organisation, being willing and able to hit the ground running and learn quickly while doing.
