Job description
NHS Resolution
Chief Financial Officer
Salary ESM1
Location: London or Leeds
At NHS Resolution, we operate with significant reach and play a complex and important role. Our main contribution to the NHS is to manage the costs that arise when things go wrong, as we work to compensate for negligent care and resolve concerns and disputes. A key component of our strategy addresses what we consider to be a duty to use what we know, to help to prevent the same thing happening again. We aim to resolve clinical claims for compensation against the NHS in England without exposing patients, families and healthcare staff to distressing and costly court proceedings. Innovation in dispute resolution, and a collaborative approach, is an important feature of our work as we continue to deliver benefits and enhance opportunities to learn and improve safety. In 2023-24 we paid out over £2.8 billion on compensation and associated costs.
We work across two interrelated sectors, health and justice. This means that we have a vital role to play in building effective relationships across both sectors, including the wider patient safety landscape. We also operate in a dynamic policy environment, so we have to maintain an understanding of emerging issues and their impact on our strategic objectives and delivery. Efficiency and quality are key priorities, as we experience increasingly high volumes of claims (resulting from improved access to justice), whilst striving to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and expert advice.
As our Chief Financial Officer, you'll provide effective and efficient strategic financial leadership, operational financial management and corporate and financial planning for the organisation. The role is an executive member of the board and reports to the Chief Executive, and you will advise the Chief Executive and the Board on all financial aspects and complex policy issues relating to the operation of NHS Resolution and the administration of our indemnity schemes. As CFO you therefore have a pivotal and corporate role to play, one that requires you to work closely with the NHS, DHSC, HM Treasury, Cabinet Office, other external agencies and the insurance industry.
It's a role with the option of breadth for candidates who want to expand beyond finance, and we are open to your thoughts on what corporate responsibilities you would welcome. Currently the role includes responsibility for HR and OD. And you will be joining at an exciting time in our development, as transformation plans such as our new IT system, CaseHub and our Claims Evolution Programme reach a critical juncture.
A qualified accountant, you will already be at board level or immediately sub-board but with extensive experience of providing strategic and corporate advice to board level. You will need to be highly numerate and able to quickly grasp the central government finance regime and the broad social, political and economic trends that influence the health sector.
We're interested in securing a highly talented, intellectually curious, yet pragmatic leader who will be able to make a strong contribution at a critical time in our development, providing outstanding leadership to multi-disciplinary teams. This role will require first class stakeholder management capability, a sophisticated approach to the establishment and maximisation of a range of partnerships and financial expertise to maintain strong governance and compliance. We have an appetite for innovation, so you'll also need to be resourceful, able to build strong working partnerships and ultimately, deliver better outcomes for the people we serve.
