Job description
Our client are the operators of several wind projects across Ireland and the UK, and they are looking for a Lead Cables Engineer to play a big role in their offshore works.
Position Description
The successful candidate will be an experienced submarine cables engineer who will support the delivery of the Cables package for both the offshore export cable and inter-array cabling system for the Windfarm project. They will work as part of the team to ensure that all technical and commercial elements of the cables packages of the project and interactions with technical advisors/suppliers are managed efficiently, to best industry standards, safely and within budget. The candidate will also be responsible for managing and coordinating the tendering and clarification phase of both export and inter array cables. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering technical design/construction
projects and initiatives within the company.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities will cover the items below:
Tender, design and engineering
? Review of contractor cable system designs and installation methodologies with respect to the Employer's
Requirements.
? Co-ordination of all aspects of the tendering phase including but not limited to managing and responding
to clarifications from the project and contractors, technical and commercial evaluation.
? Work with other package teams and ensure cross package interfacing, cables inputs and outputs are
managed efficiently.
? Preparation of technical documentation and specifications for internal or contractor's use.
? Participation in meetings with contractor's representatives at all stages of the concept refinement and
FEED phases of the project to ensure compliance with Employer's Requirements and the contract.
? Close liaison with Substation and Grid Electrical Designers and provision of cable engineering expertise to
ensure that the wind farm electrical system design is in accordance with the requirements of the wind
farm electrical concept.
? Review offshore site investigation data and provide design input to the Project Team's overall scrutiny of
the contractor's cable burial assessments. Work with contractors to investigate ways to optimise cable
burial and route engineering.
? Review and comment on detailed costing of all materials, production and technical services provided by
the contractors.
? Perform technical review of reports, design and system studies supplied by contractors and third parties
(e.g. Cable and Accessories Design and Analysis Reports, cable optimisation, fault studies etc.).
? Support the Project's various Package Managers in the execution of their relevant contracts and prepare
formal reports to assist engineering design decisions in the project.
Project Execution Phase
? Participation in meetings with contractor's representatives throughout the project execution phase to
ensure compliance with Employer's requirements and the contract.
? Participate in / lead audits of contractor's cable manufacturing facilities and installation vessels including
key sub-contractors like cable protection systems and HDD contractors.
? Participation in regular technical and update meetings across multiple packages.
? Attend & witness PQ, type tests and Factory Acceptance Testing.
General
? Contribute proactively to the delivery of an inherently safer wind farm that minimises the cost of energy
over the life of the project.
? Integrate the HSE and environmental requirements set out by the project into the cable delivery strategy;
provide package support to their development where necessary.
? Input into a risk register, HSE assessments and engineering decision log for the cables and feed into wider
project processes.
? Appropriate application of relevant standards and specifications in line with OFTO and project
expectations.
? Support value management and project optimisation process through tracking of optimisation activities
within the electrical package team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
? Minimum of 10 years' relevant experience;
? Experience with cable installation and testing;
? Experience in technical and commercial evaluation of submarine cable systems;
? Experienced in contract preparation and evaluation for vessels and subsea operations;
? Experience in subsea cable laying and burial campaigns, cable embedment, submersible vehicle
operations, vessel positioning and commercial diving procedures;
? Experienced in Dynamic Thermal Rating Systems such as DTS and RTTR systems;
? Submarine cable design, and development of specifications and employers' requirements;
? Proficient in SHEQ standards for terrestrial and offshore projects, including familiarity with CDMC/ IMO/
IMCA requirements/ recommendations;
? Experience of cable thermal rating (knowledge of CYMCAP or COMSOL modelling is a bonus), power loss,
isotherms, induced voltages & currents, transient voltage and cable pulling tension calculations;
? Strong stakeholder management capability and good communication skills Strong project and programme
management capability;
? Experience in managing and delivering complex projects;
? Experience in negotiating agreements and contracts of significant value;
? Good decision making capability and judgement;
? Ability to respond to change within a fast changing business environment.
Desirable
? Experienced in subsea surveys and engineering including interpretation of geotechnical and geophysical
reports.
Qualifications
Essential
? Level 8 engineering qualification or equivalent work experience is required.
Desirable
? Project Management Qualification.
? Technical design certification processes.
Base Location
Dublin
Hybrid working will be a feature of this role with up to 2 days per month in the office for team meetings etc.
Work assignments will usually be associated with Offshore Wind projects in Ireland, but the successful candidate will be expected to be flexible in this regard as assignments may also occur in other locations such as the UK.
Please note that when the successful candidate is required to attend offices in Dublin, travel, accommodation, and related expenses will not be reimbursed.
