Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee. This position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) - Local 1264 Union and is subject to the current provisions of the agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF Local 1264 Union. DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) HOURS OF WORK: Shift Assignment LOCATION: 1301 E 80th Ave Responsible for performing various tasks in direct support of an emergency operations center for fire and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) resources for the Anchorage Fire Department, as well as provide direct liaison for other Municipal offices after business hours. Utilize considerable independence of judgment and action, within defined policies and instructions, for dispatching emergency personnel, in a team environment. Answer E911 and non-emergency calls. Establish priority of emergency calls and determines the level of response necessary. Utilize emergency medical and fire dispatching protocols to triage emergency and non-emergency calls. Maintain radio contact with on-duty units and maintain records of all radio transmissions. Enter appropriate data in computer and report forms as required. Answer calls for public inquiries or complaints and determines appropriate agency or person to handle. Utilize knowledge of basic fire and paramedic procedures and terminology. Work is in a high-demand, high-stress office environment that requires multi-tasking of several critical tasks at time, with frequent, repetitive motion of hands/fingers and occasional exposure to loud noises. Dispatch is a 24/7 operation that requires employees to work days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Perform other related duties as assigned. High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience which involve a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties and one (1) year of public safety dispatching experience. OR High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience which involve a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties and one (1) year of experience receiving calls, analyzing situations, gathering and providing information for response to critical incidents, and taking appropriate action to respond. All applicants must possess and/or complete: Must provide proof of passing a typing test at 35 WPM at time of application. Emergency Medical Dispatching Certification within one (1) year of hire. American Red Cross/American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification or equivalent - Professional Level within one (1) year of hire. Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire. Satisfactory drug screening. Satisfactory psychological assessment (determines job suitability). Satisfactory audiological examination. NOTE: In order to be considered, official certification of ability to type 35 WPM MUST be attached to the application. Documentation or certification results must clearly indicate the applicant's name and date. Preference: Current State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level I certification, or greater. Testing Information: Successful applicants will be invited to test. Testing will begin the week of November 13, 2024, continue until complete. Testing will consist of successfully passing Critical Computerized testing which is strictly pass/fail. This Fire Dispatcher Eligibility List will be valid for (2) year period. Applicants successful in the testing process will be added to the eligibility list for positions that may become available in the future. If selected for hire, appointment in this position requires Emergency Medical and Fire Dispatching Certification, and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR or Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR Certification within one (1) year of hire. Failure to meet these conditions within one (1) year of hire will result in termination of employment. All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration. Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service.
