BUS DRIVER
Position Title: Bus Driver
Reports To: Director of Transportation
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Length of Contract: 180 Days (Salary and work year to be established by the Board of
Education.)
SUMMARY:
The Bus Driver, under the supervision of the Director of Transportation, is responsible for operating school buses at a rate of speed considered safe, as dictated by road and weather conditions. He/she represents the South Conway County School District by communicating with scholars and the public through his/her interaction with others on the job. The Bus Driver's primary responsibility is to maximize safety while driving and supervising scholars in his/her care.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Bus Driver will be evaluated by the Director of Transportation, in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Education policy on evaluation of Professional Personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Fulfills all assignments given by the direct supervisior.
- Demonstrates relentless commitment to safety, learning, and academic achievement of all scholars by actively participating in the Professional Learning Community Process and carrying out assigned responsibilities to contribute the mission of the South Conway County School District.
- Demonstrates effective customer service to all district patrons.
- Operates school buses at a rate of speed considered safe, as dictated by road, and weather conditions.
- Obeys all traffic laws.
- Maintains reasonable order on bus at all times, and reports undisciplined students to the Director of Transportation.
- Operates the bus route as directed by the Fleet Manager, or Director of Transportation, and keeps to the assigned schedule. Clears any change in the route, for any reason, with the Director of Transportation.
- Inspects the bus before each trip for mechanical defects. Reports any defects the Fleet Manager, or Head Mechanic.
- Strives to be on time, but notifies Transportation Department if late.
- The driver of a school bus shall NOT operate the school bus until every passenger is seated (Act 1744 of 2001).
- Discharges students only at authorized stops. Discharges students only at his/her assigned stop, unless notified by the Fleet Manager, or Director of Transportation.
- Will not leave bus while motor is running, and will effectively set brake when bus is stopped.
- Will keep door closed at all times except when loading and unloading scholars.
- Will keep bus clean and sanitary at all times.
- Will see that all passengers are in their assigned seats at all times, and provide a seating chart to the Director of Transportation.
- Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
- Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
- Will be held accountable for all damaged or missing bus equipment.
- Reports all accidents, and completes required reports.
- Transports only authorized scholars.
- Cell phones are prohibited while operating a school bus.
- Never strikes a child, for any reason, whatsoever. Never touches a child in anger. Tries to avoid touching children at all.
- Performs any duties within the scope of this position as assigned by the Superintendent, Director of Transportation, or Fleet Manager.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:
Hold a current Certified Drivers License; Pass a physical from a certified practitioner; Pass all appropriate background checks; Previous school bus driving experience preferred.

The position requires the individual to sometimes work irregular or extended work hours in order to meet demands of the position.
