Job Description
Under direct supervision in a non-sworn training role, recruits develop the skills required for a career in police service through training at the Long Beach Police Academy. Training includes department policies, weaponless defense, criminal and civil law, physical fitness, firearms use, arrest procedures, and community relations. Recruits may perform non-sworn support functions such as traffic and crowd control during the training process.
Long Beach Police Academy:
Candidates who meet the initial requirements will be invited to attend the Long Beach Police Academy Orientation. The Academy is accredited by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST).

Requirements
Must be 20.5 years of age or older at the time of filing.
U.S. high school graduate or GED equivalent.
Valid drivers license.
Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
No felony convictions and cannot be on court-ordered probation at the time of application or hire.
Vision correctable to 20/20.
No physical or mental limitations that prevent completion of assigned duties.

Ability to handle physical activity requiring strength, endurance, balance, and coordination.

Desirable Qualifications:
Recent college coursework in related fields.
Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog are desirable for some roles.
Selection Procedure
Examination Process:
Application and Supplemental Application: Qualifying
Written Examination: Qualifying
Eligible candidates will be invited to take a written exam, with a choice of the National Testing Network Frontline Exam (NTN) or the California POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB).
Exam Waivers:
NTN scores: Video 65, Reading 70, and Writing 70, valid within 12 months of application.
PELLETB T-Score of 45 or higher within 12 months of filing.
This is a continuous eligible list; new lists may be established periodically and remain valid for six months. Applicants may apply only once in a four-month period. Applications received by May 31, 2024, will be considered for the first exam session. Eligible veterans may receive additional credit on their passing scores, as outlined by Civil Service Procedure 3.38, with appropriate documentation (DD-214) required at the time of filing.
