Position Description: Network Support Technician
Location: San Diego, CA
Clearance Required: Top Secret Security Clearance Overview: The Network Support Technician will provide comprehensive network support to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment in San Diego (PNS-DET). This role is essential in ensuring the secure and efficient operation of local networks that are not supported under the Navy/Marine Corps Internet (NMCI) contract. The contractor personnel will be responsible for site surveys, network equipment installation, configuration, and troubleshooting while maintaining industry and Navy standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Site Surveys & Equipment Transport:
o Perform site surveys of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment (PNS-DET) facilities in accordance with Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) standards and Unified Facilities Criteria.
o Transport and install network equipment to designated PNS-DET locations as required.
2. Network Administration:
o Serve as network administrator for large local systems, responsible for configuring hubs, switches, and routers.
o Monitor network performance, conduct network diagnostics, analyze traffic patterns, and maintain security through roles such as Network Security Officer, Firewall Administrator, Intrusion Detection System Administrator, Wireless (Wi-Fi/WIDS) Manager, or Videoconference Manager.
3. Network Infrastructure Implementation:
o Support local project implementation to provide network services for business requirements.
o Plan, design, develop, and integrate network systems consistent with existing or planned network infrastructures.
4. Network Equipment Installation and Support:
o Configure, install, test, and document complex wired and wireless (Wi-Fi/WIDS/RFID) network architectures and component configurations.
o Support ongoing submarine/barge moves, including installing, removing, and reinstalling network equipment such as switches, routers, and wireless access points.
o Install/mount network equipment inside network cabinets, closets, and safes.
5. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
o Update IOS image firmware on network devices, including switches, routers, ISP equipment, and wireless access points.
o Install network software updates, fixes, and upgrades.
o Troubleshoot network issues, such as outages, ensuring minimal downtime.
6. Project Management & Coordination:
o Serve as the liaison between the contractor and the customer at San Diego, CA.
o Attend meetings with Code 109.11 representatives to plan future building moves, remodels, and projects that impact the Waterfront Support Team.
o Support submarine/barge moves by installing, removing, and reinstalling copper and fiber optic cabling from pier-side locations to designated communication points.
7. Equipment Handling & Transport:
o Transport equipment and tooling to PNS-DET-SD locations as required.
o Ensure the contractor vehicle is regularly maintained and operable, minimizing downtime.
8. Installation of Networking Components:
o Install and mount RFID readers, network cabinets, and wireless access points (AP).
Qualifications:
• Active Top Secret Security Clearance.
• Demonstrated experience in network administration, configuration, and support.
• Familiarity with BICSI standards and Unified Facilities Criteria.
• Proficiency in configuring and managing hubs, switches, routers, and wireless access points.
• Experience with copper and fiber optic cable installations.
• Ability to transport and install network equipment in various locations.
• Strong communication and coordination skills, especially in high-security environments.
