Position Description:

The Department of Technology (DT) Public Safety Division is looking for a Principal Network Engineer to join the team that designs, builds, and supports the City's public-facing municipal network. The goal of this network is to provide free Internet access to affordable housing residents through its Fiber to Housing Program, and to the network available in our parks and along Market Street. This network currently serves 100+ affordable housing sites, and 30+ parks. The public-facing network, which is separate and distinct from the City's private enterprise network, requires unique design and administration considerations due to its distinct service, support, and security requirements.

The Principal Network Engineer will join the technical team that designs, expands, and supports the public-facing network for the City. This role is under the general direction of the Fiber to Housing Program Manager and works closely with the City's fiber construction and inside network teams. The Principal Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the network infrastructure. Overall, the duties and responsibilities of a Principal Network Engineer require a strong technical background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with other teams and stakeholders within our organization.

Essential Duties:

Design and implement the network infrastructure that supports the City's public-facing networks. They must ensure that the network architecture is scalable, secure, and reliable.

Monitor the public-facing network's performance to identify and address any issues that may arise. They must also perform routine maintenance tasks, such as updating software and hardware components, to ensure the network remains functional.

Maintain the security of the network infrastructure. They must implement department security policies, procedures, and industry best practices, conduct security audits, and respond to security incidents.

Respond to and troubleshoot network problems and identify the root cause of issues that arise. They must also be able to develop and implement solutions to resolve these problems.

Work to safeguard the network infrastructure to ensure that it can recover quickly from unexpected disruptions. The responsibilities encompass assessment, planning, documentation, testing, communication, and continuous improvement to minimize downtime and maintain critical operations.

Job Type:

The Permanent Exempt - Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.

Nature of Work:

The Principal Network Engineer must be willing to work a 40-hour week. Travel to various worksites within San Francisco is required.

The Principal Network Engineer may be required to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.

Work Location:

The Principal Network Engineer performs the majority of their work at the Department of Technology - Public Safety Division, (200 Paul Ave., San Francisco, CA 94124). However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

If hired, the Principal Network Engineer must be a resident of or relocate to the State of California within 4 weeks as a condition of employment.

This position supports remote work. The Principal Network Engineer will be permitted to work a hybrid schedule with their supervisor's approval, after which they must work at least two days in the office every two weeks.
