Job Description

Under general supervision, the nutritionist serves as a staff consultant on matters of nutrition for older adults and adults with disabilities living in the community.

The nutritionist oversees and provides technical assistance to contractors funded by the department to deliver community-based nutrition services and health promotion programs. These services include, but are not limited to, congregate and home-delivered meals, food assistance, home-delivered groceries, and SNAP-Ed/CalFresh Healthy Living programs. The nutritionist ensures that contractors comply with program requirements, maintain high standards of quality and effectiveness, adhere to health and safety regulations, and meet all contractual obligations.

This position requires thorough knowledge of current evidenced-based principles and practices of nutrition support and community food access. The role also involves detailed analytical work related to program administration and requires a strong emphasis on cultural competency to effectively serve diverse populations.

Essential Duties and Functions

Serving as consultant to the staff of the department on the technical and practical aspects of the department's nutritional programs and activities.

Participating in the development, coordinating and technical accuracy of the department's nutrition programs.

Monitoring and evaluating contractor performance to ensure effective delivery of nutrition services and health promotion programs. Conduct regular site visits and prepare comprehensive reports on program implementation and outcomes.

Providing expert guidance and support to contractors to ensure adherence to nutrition and health program standards. Address and resolve any issues related to service delivery and compliance.

Analyzing data submitted by contractors to assess program effectiveness and impact. Develop findings, formulate recommendations, and collaborate with contractors to implement improvements.

Reviewing and certifying menus to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nutrition regulations. Oversee food safety practices and adherence to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards.

Organizing meetings with community nutrition contractors. Provide updates, share resources, and facilitate discussions to support continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Ensuring that nutrition services and health promotion programs are culturally appropriate and sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of the populations served. Promote inclusive practices and respect for cultural differences in all aspects of program delivery and contractor interactions. Provide guidance on culturally relevant dietary practices and preferences.

Contributing to the development and refinement of nutrition and food services policies, procedures, standards, and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
