Department Overview:
Join a public safety department that prides itself on being an integral part of the Torrance community. The Torrance Fire Department (TFD) is dedicated to life safety, environmental protection, and property conservation through education, hazard reduction, and emergency response. TFD is a nationally recognized ISO Class 1 all-risk public safety organization and a Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) Accredited Agency.

The department provides 24-hour "all-risk" safety services through seven engine companies, two truck companies, five paramedic rescue units, and a Basic Life Support Ambulance service, all managed by a shift Battalion Chief. These resources are distributed throughout six fire stations, ensuring rapid response to all types of emergencies within the city.

The title of Fire Recruit is used during the 10-week Torrance Fire Department training program. The salary during this training period is $7,336.13 per month. Upon successful completion, Fire Recruits transition to the position of Firefighter.

Torrance, California, is the eighth-largest city in Los Angeles County and is located in the South Bay region of Southern California. With over 146,000 residents and a daytime population that can exceed 250,000, Torrance spans nearly 22 square miles, including one mile of beach. The city features world-class medical and research facilities, vibrant shopping, four-star dining, and a mix of industrial and commercial facilities. Torrance is also home to major corporations like Alpine Electronics, American Honda Motor Company, and Robinson Helicopter Company.

Job Requirements:

Age: Must be 21 years of age.
US Citizenship: Required.
High School Grad/GED: Required.
Valid California Driver's License: Required.
Application Process:
Interested candidates must apply online by submitting a City of Torrance application and supplemental materials. The application period closes on Thursday, September 8, 2024.

Testing Process:
The selection process includes a written test (60%) and a panel interview (40%).

Written Test: The FireTEAM written test is administered through the National Testing Network (NTN). FireTEAM scores must be submitted during the application period, which begins on Thursday, August 8, 2024, and closes on Monday, September 9, 2024. Only scores submitted through NTN will be accepted.

Panel Interview: Tentatively scheduled for September 18, 2024, with additional dates if needed. The interview will be conducted in person.

Physical Ability Certification: A current CPAT or Biddle standardized physical abilities certification is required. Certification must remain current throughout the examination and hiring process.

Minimum Qualifications:

Age: Must be 21 years old.
Smoking: Must be a non-smoker; smoking on and off duty is prohibited.
EMT Certification: Candidates must possess a current CA EMT-1 certification.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college-level coursework or specialized training in fire science. Completion of a State of California Fire Academy or possession of a California Fire Fighter-1 Certification is required. Industrial, wildland, or military firefighting experience is highly desirable.
License: Valid driver's license. Must obtain a Firefighter Restricted Class C license before completing probation.
Medical: Must meet NFPA Standard 1582, Medical Requirements for Firefighters.
Desirable Certifications/Training:

Possession of a valid Paramedic License (Los Angeles County preferred) or completion of paramedic school.
Experience as a volunteer or auxiliary Firefighter or Ambulance Operator.
Certification in Rescue Systems 1 & 2, HazMat First Responder, and other fire courses offered through the State Fire Marshal's Office or an accredited college or university.
Low Angle Rope Rescue Operation (LARRO) certification.
Paramedics are highly desirable for this position.
