Position Overview: Eligibility Technician I

Performs general secretarial and receptionist functions in support of client, clinical and administrative staff in the Behavioral Health Program. Perform insurance eligibility and benefit verification duties. Has learned basic skills and routine tasks necessary. Beginning to learn advanced skills and gaining an understanding of total process flow. Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Verification of insurance eligibility for new clients, referrals, and upcoming scheduled appointments for existing clients.
  • Determine insurance benefits and personal financial responsibility for new clients and referrals and communicate information to clients and Patient Accounts.
  • Work with clients to obtain proof of income supporting household income reported on the Financial Investigation Form which determines eligibility of sliding fee discount.
  • Work with referral specialist and Patient Accounts to ensure prior authorization and insurance information is gathered to support proper billing of services.
  • Greet persons entering the building and receive in-coming phone calls in a courteous, professional manner. Provide appropriate information and/or directions to meet client needs.
  • Obtain updated demographic and insurance data from client, distribute necessary paperwork, and schedule appointments. Data entry for new and existing clients.
  • Receive and provide receipt for money collected from clients. Maintains petty cash drawer. Accounts for funds according to Business Office instruction.
  • Functions as secretarial support for clinical and administrative staff, including data entry, filing, copying, faxing, managing correspondence and mail distribution, maintaining forms and paperwork, maintaining office supplies, etc.
  • Covers outlying offices and main office, also covers some evening groups.

Secondary Job Functions: Eligibility Technician I

  • Cooperates as part of a support team in special projects, system improvements and managing change in procedures and activities.
  • Assists in training of other support staff, and gives supervisor feedback on workflow efficiency and gaps in training for other staff.
  • Scans documentation to upload into medical record.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Education, Experience/Skill Requirements: Eligibility Technician I

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of two years experience working in healthcare customer service performing insurance eligibility and benefit verification.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance billing practices.

Highly developed organizational skills; attention to detail.

Basic computer skills - Microsoft Office Word, Excel, etc.

Ability to interact effectively and pleasantly with the public and with staff.

Ability to recognize and respond to needs of others without direction.
