The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) & U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) Operations Department (N256) provides applied systems and mission engineering to both Combatant Commands (CCMD). N256 is a critical element of the Joint Staff / Unified CCMD Division (N250), emphasizing collaboration and mission-focused solutions. This position requires demonstrated competencies across several capability areas to include space operations, command and control (C2), communications, joint force and mission partner operations, and enterprise architecture development and documentation. Additional competencies useful for the role position include network security, mobile communications, cloud computing and security, system interoperability, and applying innovative approaches to solve space-focused technical and operational challenges. Roles and Responsibilities: Planning, implementing, and supporting Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) components and functions that enable C2 of joint space forces and assets.
Researching and identifying JCS systems and sub-systems performance, availability, reliability, and security requirements.
Conducting technical assessments of emerging technology and enabling products to meet USSPACECOM JCS requirements.
Perform Analysis of Alternatives of candidate technical solutions to space domain communication and C2 shortfalls.
Collaborate with other Combatant Commands (CCMDs), USSPACECOM Components, Military Services (as appropriate) and industry to identify potential innovation solutions to joint space force C2 and communication challenges.
Conduct capability-based assessments focused on current and emerging joint space operations requirements to identify capability gaps.
Provide expert-level thought leadership to shape the USSPACECOM J6's strategic technical strategy and develop implementation plans to achieve strategic goals related to JCS performance, capacity, reliability, availability, sustainability, and security. Basic Qualifications: Typically, Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical field, and a minimum of 5 years related space system domain experience; Master's degree and 3 years' experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and tools for identifying communication network requirements and potential material and non-material solutions.
Demonstrated technical and operational expertise in three or more of the following areas:
Interoperability, mobility, performance, and security requirements for space operations;
Techniques to increase JCS network and sub-system resiliency, availability, and survivability, performance, and security;
Identifying opportunities for effectively and securely fielding innovation solutions satisfying JCS technical and operational requirements;
Current and emerging technologies with the potential to enhance joint space operations and supporting communication capabilities and networks;
Identifying capability gaps by conducting capability-based assessments, and identifying candidate solutions for mitigating or closing capability gaps found in the assessment;
Understanding current and emerging threats to networks, service delivery, and supporting infrastructure necessary to successfully conduct command and control (C2) of space forces and assets.
Strong critical thinking, analytic, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills with the ability to write concise and accurate technical reports, present briefings, and speak to audiences of all technical and operational backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment, establish and leverage a diverse professional network, and integrate contributions from a variety of sources (people, tools, and organizations). Active Top-Secret/SCI clearance required, with the ability to be cleared for Special Access Programs. This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site. Preferred Qualifications: Previous Combatant Command (CCMD) experience. Experience supporting joint multi-domain operations. Experience with requirements engineering, identification, and documentation. Experience modeling and analyzing enterprise networks demonstrated by one of more of the following: Strong understanding of DoD communications and networking, conventional and nuclear command and control (C2), cyberspace operations, joint warfighting doctrine, joint and service logistics, and space operations missions and challenges.
Knowledge of DoD structure, organizations, missions, roles and responsibilities, and relationships.
Working knowledge of DoD acquisition, requirements generation and documentation, and resourcing processes.
Knowledge of the Defense Acquisition System, Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS), and the Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE) process. This requisition requires the candidate to have a minimum of the following clearance(s):
