Executive Director - $70,000-$75,000 - New Haven, CT

The Role

Do you have over five years' experience leading successful initiatives in the non-profit sector, coupled with a proven track record in fundraising, financial management, and donor engagement? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

We are looking for an Executive Director to lead Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LVAGNH) into its next chapter of success.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the organisation's mission, financial health, and overall operations, ensuring its continued success in providing free literacy support to adult learners.

Key Responsibilities:

Program/Administrative - Management


  • Execute the plans and policies authorized by the Board, including participation with the Board in fulfillment of the organization's Strategic Plan.
  • Serve as the lead in all development efforts to ensure the financial security of the organization.
  • Administration of operational functions including risk management, insurance, and accounting.
  • Complete state grant requirements including annual, quarterly, and other recurring documentation.

Board Involvement


  • Serve on the LVAGNH Board, attend committee meetings, and provide staff support to committees.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to the Board regarding issues needing the Board's attention.
  • Oversee preparation of timely reports to grant-funders, the Board of Directors, and donors.
  • Inform Board and staff of appropriate activities, requests, and opportunities.

Promote Financial Health - Development


  • Implement an effective fundraising plan, including cultivation of new and stewarding of existing donors. Identify new opportunities for revenue and sustainability from a diverse portfolio of donors including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government grant opportunities.
  • Participate in the execution of fundraising and development activities, including fundraising efforts/events, sponsorships, the annual appeal, and online giving campaigns.
  • Supervise contractor conducting grant writing or other development activities.
  • Represent the agency at hearings, reviews, and site visits with funders.

Volunteer Outreach and Community Awareness - Marketing


  • Increase the organization's visibility and image through effective public relations and communication strategies throughout Greater New Haven, Meriden/Wallingford, and the Valley, including oversight of effective use of social media.
  • Serve as the organization's chief spokesperson. Represent the agency to the media and the public. Promote literacy awareness and program outcomes in the communities we serve.
  • Cultivate networking and collaborative opportunities with other agencies/organizations.

Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven provides free tutoring to help adults improve speaking, reading and writing English. Volunteers tutor these adult students year-round in locations where they live and work.

The Person


  • Minimum five years of experience in a non-profit leadership or management role. Familiarity with adult education programs, literacy volunteer programs, and/or similar non-profit programs a plus. Cultural sensitivity is necessary.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree, preferably in education or non-profit management; master's degree preferred.
  • Proven record in fundraising, development, grant writing, and donor cultivation, including use of Salesforce or similar donor management database.
  • Experience in fiscal management, budget preparation and financial reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral, public speaking) and ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Integrity in dealing with all constituents: staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, donors, vendors, and peer organizations.
