PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Financial Counselor verifies insurance eligibility or identifies other funding sources, prepares price estimates for ambulatory and hospital services, and communicates them to the patients via email and telephone prior to the date of service. Information will also be provided on programs available to assist with patient liability needs including Medicaid and Financial Assistance. May collect payments or establish payment plans as applicable.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Verifies insurance eligibility and provides patients and health care providers with estimates.
  • Provides education on patient payment options and accepts payments on patient accounts via cash, check, or debit/credit card.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls and makes return calls within prescribed time limit.
  • When appropriate, verifies insurance benefits via automated systems, telephone calls and internal resources.
  • Calculates patient financial responsibility, taking into consideration co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, and type of procedure
  • Collects payments before admission in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Performs accurately with attention to detail within specific times, while managing frequent interruptions and changes in workload.
  • Works in a team environment collaboratively with various departments.
  • Protects the integrity of the institution, patients, physicians, and employees by maintaining strict confidentiality of information.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Complies with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Reports problems and concerns to supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 2+ years of customer service work experience in a medical, health insurance or financial institution.
  • Experience with insurance discovery and determination of patient out of pocket costs including copayment and deductibles is preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills.
