BASIC FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Executive Director of University Libraries, the Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing current and emerging research support services, including, digital scholarship, digital humanities, scholarly communications. This position serves as a liaison and collaborates with faculty and staff to build and nurture campus partnerships with ETS, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Assessment (CETLA), Office of Digital and Online Learning, the Center for Applied Data Science and Analytics (CASDA), and the Graduate School. The Emerging Technologies Librarian, working closing with the Digital Services unit, provides expertise, training, and resources to help faculty integrate technology with scholarly inquiry of all kinds. The Emerging Technologies Librarian supports faculty at all stages of the digital research project lifecycle by:
  • Exploring options for digital projects
  • Advising on digital project design and methods
  • Providing technical expertise and training
  • Planning the preservation of faculty work
  • Supporting digital research assignments for faculty courses

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Responsible for orienting and training student assistants and reviewing their work.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include administrators, staff, faculty, and student workers. External contacts include vendors, local firms, visiting scholars and the public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Oversee the organization, maintenance, and accessibility of the library's digital resources through Digital Howard and future HUL digital platforms. Collaborate with staff to enhance user interfaces, improve search functionalities, and ensure proper metadata tagging.
  • Serves as the open access liaison librarian and leads and promotes and supports HUL's open access.
  • Works closely with the Digital Services unit to assist in the development and implementation and management of the Founders' Innovation Hub.
  • Develops, implements, and manages an institutional repository that collects, preserves, and provides access to the research output of Howard University faculty.
  • Maintains, envisions, and implements services aligned with the research and scholarship lifecycle, supporting digital humanities, data management, geospatial information, and other related areas.
  • Provides leadership for planning and implementation of multidisciplinary digital scholarship projects that support faculty and students' scholarly activities at an R1 institution.
  • Works with liaison librarians to strengthen programs related to digital scholarship, digital collections, digital preservation, scholarly communications, the innovation hub, and other digital initiatives.
  • Develop methods to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of digital research and scholarship initiatives, the institutional repository and open access
  • Stays current on new trends and tools related to digital scholarship, open access, scholarly communications, research data initiatives, platforms, computational methods, and software.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with evolving standards, trends, and issues in metadata, and ability to apply metadata schemata.
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications issues, and the scholarly publishing lifecycle.
  • Proficiency with Open Access, Open Data, Open Science, and other academic search engine resources.
  • Knowledge of and experience with repository solutions.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to develop assessment metrics to measure effectiveness and impact of services, and the ability to collect and disseminate assessment metrics.
  • A general understanding of copyright law (U.S. copyright law) and related agreements, and an awareness of the judicial environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

ALA accredited MLS or other relevant master's degree, and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in services in an academic or research setting.

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Expected Salary Range: $68,181 - $75,000
