Job description
We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) Naval Architect Engineer - to support our Navy customer in Washington, DC. Active Secret security clearance, verifiable in JPAS, or the ability to obtain an interim Secret clearance.
Position Summary This Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) will lead a team of engineers, providing Subject Matter Expertise and strategic oversight for the design, evaluation, and integration of Marine Vessels and marine systems for the Navy Cable Laying/Repair Ship - T-ARC(X) ship construction program. This role involves managing engineering activities, coordinating with Navy clients, and ensuring projects meet technical requirements and timelines. These positions will be onsite at the ship design site or the Washington Navy Yard. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage a team of engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations to enhance the team's effectiveness and professional growth.
Oversee engineering and technical support for concept studies, feasibility studies, preliminary design, contract design, detail design, construction activities, independent design reviews, in-service engineering activities, and shipboard installation support.
Manage the review and analysis of ship design deliverables such as specifications, drawings, and calculations from shipyards, ensuring compliance with government standards and providing corrective feedback as needed. Develop technical solutions to complex engineering challenges that arise during ship design, construction, and modernization, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and to the satisfaction of Navy clients. Provide expert assessments of Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) systems, advising clients on equipment and system design issues to ensure compliance with Navy specifications and operational requirements. Interface regularly with Navy Ship Design Manager (SDM) stakeholders, providing project updates, technical guidance, and strategic recommendations to support decision-making. Ensure project deliverables are completed on time, within scope, and meet the highest quality standards.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering with at least eight (8) years of experience in Navy shipbuilding/design, OR 14 years of relevant ship design experience in lieu of a degree.
Proven experience in managing engineering teams and overseeing complex marine systems design and integration projects.
Deep understanding of marine systems, ocean systems engineering, including machinery, electrical, HVAC, propulsion, mission systems, underwater cable deployment and other shipboard systems. Strong knowledge of NAVSEA ship specifications, shipbuilding processes, and industry standards.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to effectively manage a team and collaborate with Navy clients.
Proven experience in managing engineering teams and overseeing complex marine systems design and integration projects.
Experience in Commercial Ship Building programs, Military Sealift Command Shipbuilding programs, oceanographic marine vessels or Coast Guard ship building programs is required. Active Secret security clearance, verifiable in JPAS, or the ability to obtain an interim Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications: Background in military, maritime, or marine engineering environments.
Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, AdobePro, and other relevant tools.
Extensive experience in Marine Engineering with a focus on system design and integration.
Familiarity with contract documentation, shipyard data interpretation, and NAVSEA requirements.
Master's degree in engineering or business management Discipline Professional Engineering Certification Membership to Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) or American Society of Naval Engineer (ASNE)
Salary: The salary for this position is likely $90,000 - $140,000. Salary ranges are not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary; rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
