Job description

Torch Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Navigation Estimation Engineer educated in state estimation, Kalman Filters and Particle Filters at the beautiful Eglin AFB, FL. This position supports the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate, Science and Technology Branch Alternative Navigation Section (AFRL/RWTAN) in its efforts to in its efforts to pioneer research in alternative navigation of precision-guided air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions, with decreased susceptibility to counter measures in GPS-denied or contested environments, improved weather performance, enhanced utility, and increased affordability. The selected candidate will be part of an Alternative Navigation and State Estimation team utilizing highly technical and developmental payloads on-board an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) to demonstrate navigation concepts for GPS-denied or contested environments (e.g., Magnetic, Vision, Radio Frequency, etc.) for single or multi-UAV system concepts. The qualified candidate shall assist in the software integration of hardware components including magnetometers, barometers, inertial measurement units (IMUs), optical cameras, microcontrollers, and GPS receivers. The selected candidate will be responsible for handling multiple different time measurement sources and syncing them to have a common time reference, integration of varying navigation algorithms, and developing data communication pipelines to connect all time synced hardware and navigation algorithm software and record data during live flight. This pipeline will also function as modular playback (post flight) allowing for enhanced flight analysis and parameter turning of specific algorithm components of the payload. This work will be developed and tested in real time simulations and on live-flight surrogate unmanned aircraft vehicles over Eglin AFB's test ranges. The selected candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively in group development sessions is a must. However, motivation and dedication to project tasks in an independent environment are also necessary. Knowledge of various software and code development sources must be present. The candidate should have experience in one or more of the following programming languages: C/C++, python, Java, Kotlin, Docker Containers, Matlab, and general Linux syntax. Experience with Linux operating systems is a must. Qualified candidates will have experience and understanding in one or more of the following areas: GPS/IMU Integrated Navigation Systems Analysis of flight data / Stack testing LCM Tools Extended Kalman Filters (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) Navigation Estimation Theory Knowledge of current programming languages i.e: Python, C/C++, Java, Kotlin, and Docker Integration of multiple systems, and systems-of-systems Advanced mathematics relating to object-oriented programming, controls, and linear systems GIT configuration management/repos Basic communications protocols (TCP/UDP) Knowledge of timing standards; time synching Job Requirements Applicants must be a US citizen and be eligible for a SECRET security clearance. Inability to obtain and maintain a security clearance will result in candidate being ineligible for this position Direct working experience with creating and implementing navigation filters Familiarity in Object Oriented Programing: C++/Python . Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to present technical and non-technical topics to event participants (small and medium sized groups) Bachelor's degree in a technically applicable field with 1-3 years' experience Familiarity with Linux OS. A working knowledge of standard office software such as Microsoft word processor, spreadsheet, database, and presentation tools is required. Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or applicable technical field. Comfortable with other people's code: Reading, Modifying, Debugging, and Optimizing.
