Job description

Duties You will operate firefighting equipment (e.g., pumps, foam generators, boom, ground sweep nozzles) to control or eliminate fires. You will establish on-scene control procedures (e.g., zone control, decontamination) in a hazardous material incident. You will comply with health and safety rules and procedures while treating victims. You will perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems. You will fight structural fires actively and effectively based on up-to-date knowledge of layouts, potential hazards, and fixed fire protection systems. You will perform duties at airfields handling aircraft carrying large volumes of fuel, conventional and sometimes nuclear weapons, or are highly flammable or explosive. Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements: Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment. Information on exceptions and waivers: You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination, then an annual occupational health examination thereafter. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing. You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license. This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision. Employee must be able to lift and move heavy objects such as charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment, incapacitated persons, and litter patients. Employee must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures. This is a bargaining unit position. You will participate in a Wellness and Fitness Program established by this Fire Department, in order to maintain a level of health and fitness necessary for performing the job functions. Qualifications This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: FIREFIGHTER 1, FIREFIGHTER II, HAZARDOUS MATERIAL TECHNICIAN, AIRPORT FIREFIGHTER, AERIAL DRIVER OPERATOR, PUMPER/DRIVER OPERATOR, ARFF DRIVER OPERATOR, NATIONAL REGISTRY EMT. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications and you have not attached copies of your certifications, you will be rated ineligible. Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Identifying active and potential fire hazards and providing structural firefighting IAW the Job Performance Requirements of the current edition of NFPA 1001; 2) Employing hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete incident analysis and effectively mitigate hazardous materials emergencies at the Operations level; 3) Providing emergency medical care at the BLS level to the full range of medical and trauma patients including managing respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve-mask resuscitation, and automatic external defibrillation (AED); 4) Performing driver/operator level maintenance and inspections and operating a variety of complex firefighting equipment including pumpers and/or aerial vehicles; and 5) Completing a variety of record keeping tasks using paper and computer based systems including patient care reports, equipment testing and maintenance records, NFIRS reports, vehicle and equipment inspection forms, pre-fire plans, etc. NOTE: THIS INFORMATION MUST BE SUPPORTED IN YOUR RESUME TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE POSITION.
