General Description and Classification Standards
Performs inspections of commercial structures and residential, single-family detached structures for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Supervision Received Works under very general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following: Inspects the quality of electrical work in the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, and other structures. Checks electrical installation, including fixtures and appliances; examines the grade, treatment, and quality of materials and regulations regarding electrical code compliance and life safety. Completes inspections, writes up reports on each individual job, and as required creates photographic documentation. Reviews permits and plans and examines all construction documents.
Plans and implements daily inspections schedule; Operates and maintains city vehicle. Evaluates the quality of materials and work relative to applicable electrical codes, ordinances, regulations, and relative to approved plans; issue notices to identify corrections required for compliance or to stop work on projects.
Responds to verbal and written inquiries from architects, contractors, builders, City personnel, and the general public; interprets, applies, and explains requirements and restrictions related to electrical codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures; develops alternative methods for compliance with requirements and restrictions. May assist with scheduling appointments and reviewing and approving plans in compliance with applicable electrical codes and ordinances.

Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees. May lead or instruct less experienced workers in high level or technical jobs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of: State and national electrical codes and related laws and regulations; standard practices, processes, tools, equipment and materials of the electrical trade; electrical inspection techniques and practices; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; basic investigative techniques and methods; safety standards and methods of building construction for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
Read, interpret, apply, and explain electrical building plans, blueprints, specifications, and building codes; make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately; use word processing and other related computer software programs; prepare and maintain complete, accurate, and concise reports and records. Ability to: learn electrical or energy codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City; interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building codes; determine whether construction systems conform to City code requirements; apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials; detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices; advise on standard construction methods and requirements for residential, commercial and industrial.
Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; exercise initiative making recommendations to management; communicate effectively with individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and organize and prioritize work.
