Project/Unit Description The Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division in the Electronics System Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking a Systems Engineer. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications. Many of these systems serve a national security mission by providing advanced capabilities for fulfilling multiple missions and protecting against a variety of adversarial threat types. The Systems Engineer selected for this position will design, develop, and execute systems engineering solutions for these complex systems. Job Purpose The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs. The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements. Key Responsibilities Conduct top-down functional analysis and translate requirements into detailed performance design criteria Design and build templates to assist Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in providing critical system information Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of low complexity to include defining and refining internal and external interfaces Contribute to and develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes Additional Responsibilities Design and implement systems engineering solutions for a variety of hardware and software-based systems Perform systems analysis to assess testability/suitability through the review of requirements, documentation, and system behavior Coordinate closely with multi-functional development teams to ensure research product development closely tracks with system requirements Develop requirements, test plans, procedures, scripts, data, reports, and other related formal test artifacts Conduct formal test events by executing developed automated test procedures and compiling test artifacts/reports for sponsored projects Required Minimum Qualifications Experience with systems engineering processes and methodologies applicable to complex systems Experience contributing to technical report deliverables and/or proposals Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to non-technical audiences Preferred Qualifications Active Secret Clearance Experience with DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools Experience performing in a Systems Engineering role on military radar system development programs Experience with SysML Travel Requirements Education and Length of Experience Levels 2, 3, 4 This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement.
