SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Sr. Associate Director (SAD) - Research of the Trachoma Control Program (TCP), who is the Program's Epidemiologist, the Manager of Research Projects oversees the coordination and management of the TCP research portfolio, which aligns with the TCP Research Strategy and work plan. Acting as the "right-hand" for the SAD - Research, the Manager ideates, supports, coordinates, and troubleshoots issues related to the TCP Strategy, while working closely with Principal Investigators to support and provide guidance on the administration of all aspects of the study and the strategic research agenda. Key thematic areas within TCP include surgical services, antibiotic distribution, water and hygiene, surveillance and diagnostics, and disease transmission among other domains.

The research work plan is updated annually to ensure the goals of the Trachoma Research Strategy are met and conform to the needs of the global Program. Research projects occur within and across 4 countries directly assisted by the Trachoma Control Program (Ethiopia, Niger, South Sudan, and Sudan) and the global Trachoma Program, through the WHO Alliance for the Elimination of Trachoma as a Public Health Problem and the International Coalition for Trachoma Control.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages complex research projects to advance the TCP Research Strategy, overseeing day-to-day activities of ongoing studies and the creation and execution of new studies.

Responsible for all aspects of study implementation, including conceptualization, budgeting, design, monitoring, and result dissemination, ensuring ethical compliance.

Using advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, collaborates with the SAD - Research (the Program Epidemiologist), Data Analysts (as needed), and the Team, to develop study instruments, procedures, and timelines.

Contributes to research protocol development, modifies methodologies or tools as needed, and coordinates field support for electronic data collection.

Cleans and analyzes data, resolves discrepancies with field teams, and oversees study budget and procurement with Overseas Operations.

Facilitates training for field teams, ensures accurate data documentation, and develops performance and treatment reports for management and regulatory agencies.

Coordinates and conducts special meetings and presentations to highlight progress made on the thematic areas of the research strategic agenda and the annual work plan.

Coordinates computer support for ancillary studies conducted at off-site locations.

Collaborates on reports and papers, and assists in the preparation of tables and graphs for publication and presentation.

Manages ethical review processes, ensures IRB compliance, and provides leadership, mentorship, and supervision to staff, students, and interns.

Maintains professional growth and development of self by identifying educational/training programs, professional organizations, activities, and resources to maintain knowledge of national trends and to promote leading-edge expertise.

May oversee regulatory compliance, develop grant proposals, monitor expenses, and ensure adherence to organizational policies.

Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, and psychology or related discipline and two years of professional level research experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Proven experience in epidemiology and study designs. An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as an understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, analysis, distribution, etc.).

Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Experience living and working in Africa.

Experience with STATA, SAS, R, and other analysis software, as well as experience with ArcGIS is preferred.
