Duties You will be responsible for planning, coordinating and exercising radiological technical control over duties and responsibilities of the Radiation Health Division Branches. You will prepare and/or provide oversight of procedures, instructions, plans, etc. and provide formal concurrence (as required) to technical adequacy of procedures affecting radiation health or radiation safety. You will prepare Shipyard control instructions and/or instrument operating procedures to implement standard radiological control and radiation exposure requirements issued by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). You will maintain existing control instructions and/or instrument operating procedures by initiating changes and revisions to these instructions. You will work with Health Physicists/Nuclear Engineers/Physical Science Technicians/Medical Record Technicians assigned to the branch to accomplish various phases of work projects including resolving pertinent technical problems. You will, when necessary, assume on-scene supervision and direction for control of and recovery from anomalies or events beyond the planned scope of normally. assigned personnel. You will assist the Division Head or Branch Heads on radiation health technical matters involving the initiation, improvement, evaluation and scheduling of major programs or projects undertaken by the Radiation Health Division or by other activities. You will provide training and mentoring to division personnel on subjects related to work performed by the branch. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a US Citizen. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. Qualifications For the GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer preparing and providing oversight of procedures, instructions, plans, and providing concurrence to technical adequacy of procedures affecting radiation health or radiation safety, applying theory principles and practices of Health Physics and radiation detection equipment. For the GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer preparing procedures, instructions, plans, and confirming technical adequacy of procedures affecting radiation health or radiation safety with senior nuclear engineers. Education Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
