Job description

A well-established, fast-paced manufacturing business is looking to hire a Machine Shop Manager immediately!

For 60 years they have continued to grow and expand providing a great opportunity to join the team at THE shop to work with in Idaho. This is an important role within the organization, and you will work closely with other managers and the Director of Operations where your voice and opinions will be heard when it's time to make decisions and implement programs. As the Machine Shop Manager, you will focus on problem solving, process and shop efficiency, and keeping the team on track.

Machine Shop Manager Responsibilities:


  • Safety Management: Lead safety initiatives by organizing monthly safety meetings, reviewing work setups for risks, and providing necessary training. Ensure all safety practices are followed and documented.
  • Productivity Oversight: Manage daily job lineups, pre-plan jobs, and assign craftsmen to tasks. Ensure work order routers contain sufficient information, and oversee the quality of products being produced.
  • Team Coordination: Work closely with craftsmen throughout the day to ensure productivity, quality, and adherence to schedules. Communicate regularly with Project Managers to keep them informed of progress and issues.
  • Shop Organization: Maintain an organized shop environment by managing tools, equipment, and materials. Establish and enforce cleanup rules, and ensure all parts are properly labeled and documented during manufacturing.
  • Maintenance & Training: Oversee machine and facility maintenance requests, train craftsmen on preventative maintenance, and provide ongoing training in machine use, quality control, and company goals.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Check and manage inspection reports, NCRs, and other documentation. Conduct regular reviews of craftsmen, including quarterly interviews and annual performance evaluations.

Machine Shop Manager Experience & Qualifications:


  • Safety & Compliance: Strong understanding of safety practices, PPE requirements, rigging, lifting, and equipment usage. Able to train employees on safety standards and ensure compliance with company safety policies.
  • Machining Expertise: Experienced in both CNC and manual machining, with proficiency in Mastercam programming. Thorough knowledge of reading drawings, geometric dimensioning, and tolerancing.
  • Management Skills: Proven ability to develop and manage teams, organize and conduct training, and perform employee evaluations. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using company-standard software and timekeeping systems. Ability to review and understand quality standards, customer expectations, and company manuals.
  • Physical Capability: Capable of performing physical tasks such as walking through the shop, climbing, lifting, bending, and reaching for tools and equipment.

Ideal Machine Shop Manager Profile

The ideal candidate is a seasoned machinist with a foundation in both CNC and manual machining in a job shop environment, preferably with large fabrications, combined with strong leadership and management skills. They proactively ensure safety and productivity while maintaining a well-organized shop. This individual excels at training/developing teams, is adept at managing multiple responsibilities, and communicates effectively.
