POSITION: Night Custodian

Job Focus: Perform custodial/maintenance duties as required.

Essential Work Hours: 2:45 p.m. - 10:45 p.m. (Summer and School Breaks Hours may differ)

Line of Supervision: Responsible to the Building Principal, Facility Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent/CSBO and Superintendent

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with providing custodian services to a school building, including duties that may include keeping buildings, sidewalks, bathrooms, stairwells, hallways, closets, classrooms, and offices cleaned and maintained
  • Responsible for nightly cleaning classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and other areas as assigned
  • Clean corridors and entrances as assigned.
  • During the winter and spring breaks, as well as summer months, the night custodian may move to a day schedule to facilitate the cleaning and preparation of the building for students and staff.
  • Perform driving duties such as deliveries and other necessary deliveries as needed or as required.
  • Perform necessary and preventative building minor maintenance and repairs within the building. These repairs may include repairing or replacing pencil sharpeners, repairing furniture, replacing ceiling tiles, and other little maintenance to keep the physical school facility (indoor and outdoor) in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Assists with setting up and moving furniture, equipment, and supplies for school events.
  • Distribute and deliver items to classrooms and offices.
  • Assist the facility director in clearing snow and ice on entrances and sidewalks.
  • Perform crossing guard duty as assigned.
  • Respond to any building calls, requests, and emergencies as required.
  • Ensure the U.S. and Illinois flags are displayed daily as needed and in good condition.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the School Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Be responsible for all tools, supplies, keys, equipment, and other movable property stored in and used in the building.
  • Coordinate an intensive cleaning and repair program for the summer months in collaboration with the Superintendent, Facility Coordinator, or designee.
  • Be respectful to others and courteous to teachers.
  • Maintain friendly relationships with students and be polite and helpful to visitors.
  • Comply promptly and cheerfully to requests made by the Building Administration.
  • Observe all Board of Education policies, regulations, administrative rules, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent/CSBO, Facility Coordinator, and Building Principal may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma.
  • Background Check as outlined by ISBE
  • Must have a valid State of Illinois driver's license and excellent driver's record.
  • Be of good health and character.
  • Be able to follow both written and oral directions.
  • Be willing to work with and around adults and children.
  • Be able to follow a set of work schedules and procedures.
  • Have general knowledge of building materials, equipment, tools, and techniques.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Be willing to learn new skills and follow directions.
  • Experience in custodial/maintenance duties preferred.

Physical Demands:

An employee must meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move at least 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must be able to move and use ladders. The employee must withstand exposure to outdoor and indoor elements such as rain, humidity, snow, wind, noise, and other hot and cold weather elements.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Full-time position, Twelve months per year. Salary and other benefits are established by the Board of Education as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
