About the job:
Hopedale Wellness Center is looking for a Swim Instructor to provide swim lessons (private or group) to children of all levels and abilities and will educate swim lesson participants to swim the basic strokes of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke to the best of their ability through creative and diligent efforts. This position will be responsible for the safety of the participants and will plan and implement the swim lessons to pre-school-school age children. Must be able to demonstrate and promote positive guest relations with the class participants and parents/legal guardians. This position will also be responsible for the cleanup of supplies following class/instruction.
Responsibilities
- Work hours as scheduled, which includes beginning and ending class on time; remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent questions as needed and clean up supplies.
- Instructs and evaluates students participating in swim lessons and promote swimmer safety.
- Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
- Assists management in gathering data. Responsible for keeping attendance and entering the number of total swimming lesson participants for each day into the Tally Sheet binder.
- Collaborates with other aquatics staff to develop optimal strategies for teaching and behavior management.
- Leads group and private swimming lessons to participants of all ages and ability levels using developmentally appropriate and effective techniques. This includes teaching stroke techniques and water safety.
- Responsible for recommending, implementing, and communicating policies and procedures related to aquatics within the Wellness Center. Recommends new or revised procedures and practices to increase the effectiveness of services in accordance with Hopedale Medical Complex, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensures efficient operation of the Aquatic Fitness Program by notifying appropriate personnel for repairs and maintaining adequate supplies. Suggests purchase of new equipment and products related to aquatics based on professional opinion and membership feedback.
- Administers and ensures adherence to department, Medical Complex and third-party safety standards and recommends solutions and improvements for safety problems.
- Maintains and improves knowledge of developments in the field by reading appropriate articles and watching appropriate videos as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator and sharing the same information with peers as appropriate. Experiments with appropriate innovative teaching techniques and learns through personal experience and observation of other swim instructors and the Aquatics Coordinator.
- Ideal candidate will have a background in swimming or life guarding and must be CPR/AED certified.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in secondary school, is required.
- Ability to provide safe instruction to members.
- Valid CPR/AED certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire, is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, members and HMC personnel is required.
- Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate swimming techniques including front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, individual medley, medley relay, legal turns including flip turns, use of a pace clock for training purposes, and/or the ability to quickly master this knowledge and these skills via job training.
- Analytical skills necessary in order to break complex movements into parts and organize into a logical instructional sequence.
- Creativity to improvise and innovate new ways of explaining, demonstrating, and coaching to improve quality of teaching and learning.
- The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide swimming lessons appropriate to the age and ability of the members served in the Wellness Center. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of growth and development, behavior management, and the physical, emotional, and psycho-social needs of the population served.
Physical Demands
- Work requires ability to lift & carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
- Work requires ability to withstand 3 or more hours in the pool on a daily basis.
- Work requires ability to stand, walk, and kneel for ninety percent of work time.
- Work requires ability to stoop and bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands, have manual dexterity, and communicate with other people.
Working Conditions
- General Wellness Center environment with occasional exposure to infectious material, contagious disease, bodily excretions, and hazardous material.
- Ability to walk, stand, kneel, and swim for 100% of work time and able to lift & carry up to fifty pounds for 10% throughout the workday.

Compensation details: 25 Hourly Wage
