JOB SUMMARY:

The State & Local Tax Accountant is responsible for guiding the tax compliance efforts for all jurisdictions in which the assigned organizations operate. This individual will function as a project manager to ensure accurate data distribution, file maintenance, and on-time tax filings are completed with third-party firms. The State & Local Tax Accountant will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with tax law and regulations and communicating any changes with internal stakeholders, as necessary.

  • ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Manages tax compliance for all assigned organizations
  • Ensures on-time tax filings as required by all jurisdictions in which the company operates, including sales & use tax, VAT, property taxes, and business licenses.
  • Confirms on-time submissions of monthly and quarterly payments as required by all jurisdictions in which the company operates.
  • Performs a review for completeness and accuracy of advisory recommendations of all payments, accrual postings, and filings.
  • Coordinates and posts monthly tax accruals and reconciles assigned tax accounts as part of the close process.
  • Acts as Project Manager to coordinate all required information with government auditors and third-party firms as assigned.
  • Develops and maintains a professional, positive relationship with government tax auditors, tax advisory firms, and Team Members to provide data and audit information.
  • Prepares all data inputs and provides to external tax advisors and government auditors and provides notice/communicates data with all internal stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Communicates confirmation of payments and filings to government agencies with internal stakeholders.
  • Provides copies of all correspondence and documents with government agencies in a shared file with Manager, Tax.
  • Stays up to date on all tax regulations, requirements, and legal changes to ensure compliance for all assigned organizations.
  • Conducts an overview of methodology, completeness, and accuracy with supervisor prior to submission of tax filings.
  • Remains consistent with legal requirements, auditing filings and data reports on a regular basis throughout the fiscal year.
  • Completes periodic evaluations and adjustments to ensure consistency with federal, state, and local tax obligations.
  • Utilizes external resources to stay abreast of upcoming tax compliance changes and communicates any changes to internal stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Supports the Tax, Finance, and Accounting functions, maintaining close contact with the Manager, Tax working on special tax reporting and projects as needed.
  • Provides agreed upon status updates of all ongoing activities, including state and federal audit activity including key issues raised by government auditors, estimation of potential exposure, information requests, status of submissions/responses to inquiries, and upcoming deadlines.
  • Maintains and communicates a calendar of all key tax deadlines, upcoming assessments, and payments.
  • Supports requests for special tax/accounting reporting, as necessary.
  • Aids in special projects for the finance team as needed.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of three to five years of related sales and use, VAT, and/or property tax experience. Proven project management experience preferred. Strong spreadsheet skills are a requirement. SAP and Vertex experience is a plus.
