Department Information

Since 1966, IU Campus Bus Service has been providing bus service on the Bloomington campus. IU Bloomington's 1940-acre campus is often considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation and is set in USA Today's Best College Town in America.
IU Bloomington is home to close to 43,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 19,000 faculty, staff, and part-time employees.

Campus Bus provides transportation to over three million rides a year and operates a six-route system with approximately 30 buses, 50 bus operators, 4 mechanics, and a management team. It has a long-standing partnership with the local transit system, further extending its reach and resources.

Campus Bus is a business unit within Auxiliary Business Services (ABS). ABS operate in a shared services model that supports finance, human resources, payroll, and marketing needs of Campus Bus.

Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for collaborating and communicating with the other maintenance team members to ensure all vehicles are operating safely and efficiently.
General Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses, tests, adjusts, and repairs systems of heavy-duty diesel-powered public transit vehicles. Examines, test drives, and troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems using standard testing procedures and computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs repairs and replaces defective parts. Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services according to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Maintains inventory and restocks parts. May respond to road calls. Maintains records of repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • May perform other general garage duties as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as GED or HSED)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 3 years of experience with diesel engine or bus repair with ability to complete manufacturer's training programs on various bus systems
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid CDL (commercial driver's license) with Class B Passenger and Air Brake endorsement or the ability to obtain the required license within 6 months of hire and ability to be insured by Indiana University. These are Safety Sensitive positions as defined by the Federal Transit Administration and are therefore subject to all current and future FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
