Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages software and hardware systems in a complex, heterogeneous computing environment across the departments of Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, and Library Information Science within the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
  • Provides system architecture design and lead technical support to the School's faculty, other IT staff, and the director of IT.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to protect the Luddy Linux infrastructure.
  • Provides highly specialized systems engineering expertise related to the design, configuration, deployment, and modification of customized Linux infrastructure, kernel software, and open-source applications software.
  • Creates and modifies script programs to customize configuration for installation of open-source applications.
  • Plans, prototypes, configures, deploys, and modifies research systems.
  • Identifies, builds, and deploys tools for operation of servers in a highly available network infrastructure.
  • Serves as a point of escalation for problem diagnosis and resolution for problems of the utmost complexity relating to research and high-performance parallel computer systems.
  • Provides consultation and expertise to researchers regarding Linux systems and high-performance technologies and software.
  • Leads the development, deployment, and configuration of Linux clustering equipment for research and instruction purposes at the Luddy School.
  • Leads studies on new technologies to determine feasibility including performing cost benefit analysis.
  • Supports, configures, analyzes, and modifies high performance computing software applications for Luddy research centers using high performance computing environments.
  • Provides Linux system administration for 350+ Linux workstations and servers running in a 24x7 environment providing installation, administration, security, support, and documentation.
  • Writes programs to automate, configure, update, and optimize Linux systems.
  • Works independently to analyze faculty/staff compute requirements to anticipate and plan for future Linux computing needs.
  • Monitors, identifies, and resolves production capacity, contention, and resource deficiencies.
  • Conducts security reviews of infrastructure, applications and policies.
  • Conducts network, system, and application-level vulnerability testing.
General Responsibilities
  • Configures, tests, troubleshoots, upgrades/modifies, and maintains file, print, application, web, database servers and related technologies, including hardware/software configuration and installation, operating system installation and support, security and configuration, backup strategies, business continuity strategies, and institutes best practices on modernizing systems in relation to changing technologies.
  • Establishes metrics and monitors systems configuration(s) to ensure data integrity and optimum system performance metrics are obtained.
  • Implements system architectural plans, design modifications, and ensures compliance with federal and university policies and standards.
  • Provides experienced analysis and evaluates new capabilities and emerging technologies; implements new systems and improves existing ones all the while making sure established protocols and procedures are followed.
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge to bug reporting and isolation, test case authoring and refinement, automation scripts, and works closely with other teams (engineering, cross functional and cross campus) to resolve problems.
  • Documents systems administration practices and processes (testing, upgrades/modifications, issue/problem resolution).

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science or related field)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of systems administration or related experience
  • Experience with one or more scripting language
Preferred
  • 2 years specifically involving Linux Administration
  • 3 years providing computer support

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$70,000 to $80,000 per year dependent upon experience and internal equity.

Work Hours

The typical IU workday is 8am-5pm (EST), Monday through Friday; however, occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday work may be required.
