From our space in the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU), hospitality staff serve thousands of guests each year through professional dining and retail operations and catered events, conferences, and celebrations, keeping our spaces clean, our food tasty, and our customers happy.

IMU dining runs all dining operations in the Indiana Memorial Union, including the Tudor Room, Sugar & Spice, The Vault Pub, and the Globe. IMU dining staff work closely with the hotel and catering teams, as well as IU's retail dining, to embody the Hoosier spirit through every customer interaction.

Job Summary

  • Under direct supervision, prepares baked goods according to recipes and following all food safety precautions.
  • Checks and controls the proper storage of product and portion control.
  • Decorates cookies, pies, cakes, dessert bars, chocolates, etc.
  • Mixes and bakes doughs, batters, sauces, etc.
  • Records and interprets orders, determines production list, and determines quantities of ingredients needed.
  • Completes prep lists in allotted time frame.
  • Visually inspects, selects and uses only food items of the highest quality in the preparation of all menu items.
  • Follows recipes and measurements using a variety of kitchen equipment to prepare baked goods.
  • Tests baked goods by sampling portions and smelling their aroma for accuracy.
  • Sets up retail and catering orders based on pars established by Pastry Chef and by following production sheets.
  • Ensures baked and pastry goods are stored and kept at proper holding temperatures, through the use of thermometers.
  • Completes various opening and closing tasks, including maintaining cleanliness of bakery tables, shelves, coolers, floors, and equipment.
  • Informs supervisor of any irregularities occurring within the food preparation.
  • Promotes and maintains the highest level of customer service to all guests while staying alert to their needs.
  • Resolves guest complaints within scope of authority; otherwise refers the matter to management.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • General knowledge at the high school level.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred
  • Previous experience in related field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Food Safety (ServSafe) certification within 180 days from date of hire.
SKILLS

Required
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Working knowledge of preparation methods and practices for a variety of foods.
  • Knowledge of basic kitchen sanitation methods and food safety practices.
  • Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret recipes and calculate necessary quantities of ingredients.
  • Ability to learn and operate institutional kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate both preparation and timing for menu food items.
  • Ability to perform work requiring considerable standing and light-medium physical effort under hot and or humid working conditions.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable standards of personal hygiene.
  • Ability to review and analyze impending menus to determine appropriate levels for supplies.
  • Ability to work in team environment as an effective team player.

Working Conditions / Demands

This position requires tasks typically associated with back-of-the-house food service work. It involves periods of both sedentary work and times of frequent movement about the workspace. This position involves using commercial kitchen equipment and tools, moving supplies weighing from 20 to 50 pounds, and effective communication skills are necessary. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$15.00 per hour

Work Hours

5:00 AM - 1:30 PM, Monday through Friday with occasional weekends

Management reserves the right to adjust work hours to accommodate special meals and events.
