PURPOSE STATEMENT The job of Bus Driver is done for the purposes/s of transporting students to and from school, for scheduled activities and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses/vans. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all the duties and responsibilities performed by this position. Drives the bus for the purpose of transporting regular education and/or special education students to and from school, for scheduled activities and to/from field trips in a safe and timely manner. Escorts children for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students. Fuels assigned vehicles, (e.g. oil, water, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition. Inspects assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior (e.g. cleaning floors/windows/mirrors/seats, etc.) for the purposes of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle. Monitors students, parents and/or teachers during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers. Performs first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health needs of passengers. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. inside of bus, brake systems, gauges, emergency exits, fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements. Communicates professionally with parents, students, teachers, administrators, etc., for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information. Prepares documentation (e.g. daily mileage and condition reports, incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive behavior reports, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. Assists students and other passengers (e.g. seating, restraints, special equipment, lifts, luggage, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from uses including both emergency situations (including bus evacuations) and normal transport. Attends meetings, trainings, etc., for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of activity bus driver. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective working environment SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Basic operation, maintenance and servicing of motor vehicle and equipment. Traffic laws, ordinances and rules governing buses/vans on public roadways. Skill in: Reading maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Operating specialized equipment used in buses/vans. Operating small hand and power tools and other related equipment. Ability to: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions. Read and understand street/route maps and street markings and signs. Write routine reports and correspondence. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Perform manual labor. Complete paperwork and documentation. Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High School Diploma, or G.E.D., and 2 years of full time bus driver, heavy truck and/or construction equipment operations or closely related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. CERTIFICATION Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Indiana driver license and maintain a valid Indiana Commercial Driver License (CDL) with passenger, air brakes, school bus or other endorsements appropriate to the equipment assigned/operated at time of hire.
