Job description

Duties - Performs developmental assignments consisting of a series of specific and related tasks which have been selected to develop skills and orient the employee in the practical application of principle, concepts, and techniques of aircraft maintenance. - Under close supervision, learns to perform the more advanced work of the aircraft mechanic trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of the trade. - Uses and accounts for all hand and power tools and equipment, such as pneumatic wrenches, torque wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, end wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. - Performs shop support work. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. More information on PCS requirements, may be found at: This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program Disclosure of Political Appointments May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, uncommon tours, weekends, etc. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance. The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or with assistance from other workers. The duties of this position require the employee to operate a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an AIRCRAFT MECHANIC HELPER without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: WG-5 1. Ability to follow directions, safety regulations, and procedures and work closely with others. 2. Ability to learn technical practices to select tools and carry out the aircraft mechanical work assigned. 3. Ability to learn to use and maintain hand and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, torque wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, end wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. 4. Ability to learn to read and use written instructions, standard specifications, mechanical drawings, and wiring diagrams to apply basic principles and practices related to aircraft maintenance. 5. Ability to learn to receive, validate, and store tools, equipment, and supplies. 6. Ability to learn to read and use blueprints, schematics, sketches, and technical orders. WG-8 1. Knowledge of the operations and functions of a number aircraft components and parts, and the methods of removal and installation so that the parts and components are not damaged or misaligned along with the knowledge of a number of less complex aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as ejection seats, nuclear shielding, or similar self-contained systems 2. Knowledge of operational and maintenance records, both manual and automated, and of the terminology and format to report work performed. 3. Skill in locating and correcting such problems as improper travel, or excessive friction or play between parts and the use of measuring instruments such as torque wrenches, micrometers, go-no-go gauges, multimeters, feeler gauges, and tension meters. 4. Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, and end wrenches, and the pattern of tightening and amount of torque to apply to assure a solid connection. 5. Ability to recognize a variety of parts and components such as gaskets, couplings, control cables, gear boxes, and flight control surfaces, and when they may be cleaned and reinstalled, or must be replaced. 6. Ability to follow oral/written instructions and understand specific directions including disassembly, assembly, and adjustment directions to replace control cables and pulleys, lace in fuel bladders, and reinstall hydraulic lines, air ducts, and inspection plates. WG-10 1. Knowledge of the makeup, operation, installation, and adjustment of a variety of major interrelated and/or integrated aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as fuel and hydraulic systems, flight control systems, instrumentation systems, engines, landing gear assemblies, airframe, and control surfaces. 2. Knowledge of a wide variety of parts, components, subsystems, and assemblies such as ejection seats, nuclear shielding, or similar self-contained systems. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. 4. Knowledge of supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures. 5. Skill in the use of standard and specialized tools and test equipment including fixtures, templates, scales, teststands, and external power sources. 6. Skill in reading and understanding data and settings from cockpit instruments and gauges. Ability to rig, function test, or troubleshoot systems; determine when they are operating properly or whether portions of the system should be repaired or replaced; and the type and extent of adjustment and alignment needed. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
