Department Information

The IU Indianapolis TRIO Upward Bound program is seeking qualified tutors to help with the academic needs of program participants. Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparatory program for first-generation and low-income families. We serve college-bound, culturally diverse high school students. The program emphasizes preparation in English, Math, Foreign Language, Science, as well as the enhancement of study skills. Tutors cannot only help high school students understand and complete their course work, but they can become mentors and positively influence the lives of Upward Bound students.

Job Summary

• Provides tutoring services to Upward Bound students either individually or with a small group.
• Serves as a mentor to the students.
• Facilitates productivity of students.
• Helps ensure students safety during programming.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree

Preferred

• Secondary school certification or graduate student

SKILLS

Required

• Proficient in area of study and/or areas of academic need
• Ability to effectively work and communicate with high school youth
• Dependability and strong communication skills
• Possesses a high level of maturity, be self-disciplined
• Ability to work on a team
• Familiarity with and sensitivity to the needs of program participants

Preferred

• Demonstrates high ability levels in math and/or science

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Required to work 1 Saturday a month.

Taylor Hall

IU Indianapolis campus

This position is eligible for remote work, via zoom starting September 3, 2024, subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$25 per hour

Work Hours

Up to 6 hours per week, but there are some events where additional hours can be worked.

Tuesdays, 4:30PM to 7:30PM and Wednesdays, 4:30PM to 7:30PM
