46219 Pay rates: 65-80/hr Duration: 12 months Principal Mechanical Engineer - Structural Analyst The Structural Analyst is responsible for detailed Structural Analysis to support all phases of programs including development and production of mechanical systems for military environments, with a focus on aircraft and armament products. The analyses will cover a wide range of difficult problems, requiring solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives. The analysis tasks will span the spectrum from classical hand analyses to detailed analyses requiring the use of finite element analysis software. Qualified candidate should be familiar with developing structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite and bonded structures for mechanical, armament, aircraft and avionics equipment. As a Structural Analyst, you will work under general direction and will be expected to define the scope and level of analysis required to meet required objectives and will be held accountable for completing the work within the agreed upon cost and schedule. While the primary focus of this position is to perform dynamic and static structural analysis of mechanical structures, the qualified candidate may also be responsible for performing thermal stress analysis, transient thermal analysis, dynamic testing, and climatic testing. Additionally, you will be expected to present your work for peer reviews and to be a peer reviewer for other engineers' work. The customers of this position will include internal Vertex personnel and programs as well as external customer personnel and programs. You will work with the customer and engineering leadership to define testing required to validate analyses and to verify that hardware is compliant with requirements. In addition, you are expected to plan and support tests, perform data reduction and engage in model correlation. Dynamic and climatic testing will be in accordance with Mil-Std-810 and involve the managing and running of environmental test to cover such things as temperature, vibration and shock for the purpose of correlating the test results to the analysis in pursuit of qualifying the product. The candidate will be expect to design test setups, interface with technicians and support the completion of test reports to satisfy customer and program requirements. Minimum Required Education, Experience & Skills: Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or a degree in a related field 8+ years of professional experience with structural analysis Deep understanding of structural analysis concepts: Stress/strain, linear/non-linear, static and dynamic analysis, structural fatigue, fracture and damage tolerance, bolted joints, etc. Aircraft structural design, electronics structural design, and/or avionics platform integration structural design Demonstrated expertise in leading structural testing: planning, organization, instrumentation, execution, data reduction and correlation Experience performing Structural Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS or equivalent software Expertise performing hand calculations based on fundamental equations Applied work experience managing a group, leading a small team, or serving as a technical lead Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance U.S. Citizenship status is required Desired Experience & Skills: Master's in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering Current DoD Secret clearance 10 or more years of experience in the structural analysis of complex systems that require collaboration of multiple engineering disciplines (such as a weapon system) Experience with military or aerospace structural environments (i.e. Mil-Std-810 or DO-160) Experience with aircraft structure: Including primary structure, podded system, bomb racks, or launchers. CFD analysis Development of critical load cases - balancing mechanical loads and thermal loads Structural integrity analysis to assess static Margin of Safety as well as fatigue life (cumulative damage index) Experience with NAVAIR 4.0 and/or SEEK EAGLE airworthiness processes needed to obtain flight clearance Thermal analysis experience, especially in military or aerospace environments Experience with solid modeling CAD tool such as CREO or equivalent Ability to manage priorities Ability to work independently Self-starter Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment with positive interaction Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written
