Job description

Job Summary Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) can provide patient care on a personal level. They usually report directly to physicians, nurse practitioners (NP), and RN's. They can also be responsible for taking vitals, monitoring I and O volumes, help with rehabilitation, able to lift 50 lbs. or more, operate medical equipment, and treating common ailments like bedsores. They are also able to prepare and/or perform several procedures such as giving enemas, dressing wounds, changing dressings and bathing patients. Because they have frequent direct contact with patients, LPN's are important in helping patients deal with their illnesses and in some states, but not all, LPN's may administer prescribed medications or start IV fluids. As patient advocates, they must: Be mindful of what is best for the patient at all times Be responsible and detailed orientated Be able to give patients and their families advice and emotional support Be able to examine and assess patients' conditions Be able to determine when assistance is required Be aware of patient's rights Equally important, they need the emotional stability to cope with human suffering, medical emergencies and other stresses. LPN's must observe procedures to minimize infection, chemical contamination and needle sticks.
