Job Description
Ensures that Central Sterile Processing (CSP) technicians at UMMC are properly trained and operating within the guidelines set forth by various industry standards and regulations including, but not limited to, IAHCSMM, CBCSP, AORN, The Joint Commission, FDA, CDC, OSHA, and AAMI. Performs various other training duties related to instrument processing as necessary. Includes alternate facility sites as needed in order to conduct training, including clinic areas.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

- Should have a working knowledge/understanding of Adult Learning Theory
- Ability to organize complex educational projects
- Can be accomplished in initial orientation and training period
- Conducts orientation and training of new employees
- Monitors and tracks performance of newly hired employees to track progress
- Conducts initial assessments and annual employee competencies
- Responsible for seeking/sharing current knowledge related to professional field, procedures, and regulations
- Joins and attends local professional organization to obtain updated information
- Assist Manager in development and implementation
- Develops and maintains an education plan. Conducts CSP training based on best demonstrated practices
- Reviews and revises policies and procedures in collaboration with CSP manager to ensure best demonstrated practices
- Monitors and revises education programs as necessary to ensure staff receive updated information
- Develops and maintains a schedule for continuing education and training
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks as demonstrated through meeting timelines
- Conducts in-services to provide standardized information
- Documents all training
- Conducts annual audits of staff training records to ensure compliance with governing guidelines
- Ensures resources are available to meet requirements of staff certification
- Obtains applicable reference material
- Engages staff to join and participate in certification readiness course
- Maintains documentation relating to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning, delivering, and managing training and development activities
- Documents and communicates all successes and barriers
- Collaborates with committees, councils, leadership, and other professionals in teaching, consultation, research, and facilitation of best demonstrated practices related to instrument processing
- Promotes customer service and the mission of the University of Maryland
- In collaboration with CSP Manager and Peri-Op Quality Coordinator, promotes quality assurance and performance improvement related to employee technical skills and Infection Prevention
- Models behavior that is appropriate for affiliation with the University of Maryland
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Associate degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school preferred.
- Minimum 5 years experience as OR Nurse, surgical technologist, Central Sterile technician, or other related technical role for sterile processing required; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Certified in related field or the ability to become certified within 12 months of hire required. Must also obtain and maintain additional certification in CSP sub- specialty, IAHCSMM or CBCSP certification acceptable.
- Working knowledge of computers with intermediate skills in Microsoft Office applications; ability to learn additional software as required
- Extensive knowledge of Operating Room, medical instruments and O.R. procedures. Ability to interact and teach various levels of learners
- Ability to work independently with both co-workers and subordinates to solve problems utilizing common sense and good judgement
- Attends annual educational conferences relating to sterile processing in order to stay current with industry standards
- Working knowledge of instrument tracking systems.
- Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
