Position Type: Transportation/Activity Bus Driver Date Posted: 7/3/2024 Location: Transportation Office Closing Date: until filled Additional Information: Show/Hide Activity Bus Driver Transportation Department Grade 8 of the ESP Salary Scale Parks at Commonwealth Avenue Hours vary; This is not a permanent position; employee works on an "as-needed basis" Reports to Supervisor of Transportation Note: The Activity Driver provides safe and reliable transportation services to students for athletics, field trips and other extra-curriculum programming that occurs during the time regular route buses are transporting students to and from school. Activity drivers do field trips that interfere with regular school bus routes. Trips are both in county, out of county, and out of state. The position is not a full-time permanent position. The position also acts as a substitute driver when not assigned to a trip. The expectation is that assigned trips will be accepted. Minimum Requirements Meet all licensing requirements of the Motor Vehicle Administration for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Meet all the requirements of COMAR l3A.06.07 (PUPIL TRANSPORTATION) for a School Bus Driver. Have not more than two current points on the driving record and have a satisfactory past driving record. Successfully completed the required pre-service instruction. Have no evidence of a criminal record which makes the individual unfit for employment as a school bus driver. Current certified school bus driver with WCPS. Must be 21 years of age to operate a school bus. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Satisfactorily completes the requirements of the Department of Transportation physical examination for school bus drivers. Has the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. Preferred Qualifications Holds High School Diploma/GED. Demonstrates an aptitude and competence for the position of Activity Bus Driver. Provides acceptable references as to one's ability to work with and supervise children. Role Responsibilities Provide transportation for school-related extracurricular trips which occur during the time that regular route buses are transporting students to and from school. May be asked to substitute on regular routes as needed when not assigned to an activity or field trip. Transport students to various locations including Baltimore City, Washington DC and other in-state and out-of-state locations. Remain available throughout the school-year. Activity drivers that are unavailable or unwilling to drive to all destinations or turn-in assigned trips without approval will be reclassified as a substitute school bus driver, as determined by the Transportation Department. Obey all traffic laws. Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses. Maintain discipline when students are on bus. Report undisciplined students to the proper authority. Keep assigned bus clean. Keep to assigned schedule. Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to each route, checking for mechanical defects. Perform a post-trip inspection following each route, checking for damage, students and belongings. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness. Discharge students only at authorized stops. Exercise responsible leadership when on school trips. Transport only authorized students and authorized chaperones. Report all accidents immediately and complete required reports. Enforce rules and regulations for students riding the bus. Operate the bus within the guidelines as outlined in the WCPS School Bus Driver's Handbook. Present assigned bus for inspection meeting all requirements as established by the Transportation Department. Proper use of all safety equipment including use of driver's seat belt and shoulder harness. Demonstrate courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools. Perform other school bus related duties as may be assigned. Environmental Factors and Physical/Mental Requirements The Environmental Factors and Physical/Mental demands represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Required periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer and other office equipment. Ability to sufficiently and efficiently move throughout the building and grounds for extended periods. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with others as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to move, raise, lower, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Must be able to bend, crouch, stoop, reach, and climb ladders. Will be subjected to loud noises, dusts, fumes, hot and cold outdoor temperatures and related weather conditions.
