Job description

Duties (GS-09) The primary purpose of this position is: To investigate and analyze a variety of problems and/ or conditions in the workplace which may adversely affect the health of workers, the public, or the environment, making recommendations to control and/or eliminate these environmental and health hazards. Implements various base programs, providing support to work centers through surveys, evaluations, and training. Duties: Plans, organizes and manages the installation Public Health Surveillance Program and provides support to the Industrial Hygiene program. Performs inspection of food establishments, distributors, and storage facilities and ensures food safety and food handling and preparation. Provides Occupational Health Program training for Traditional Reservist, Air Reserve Technicians and active duty personnel. Performs Emergency Management and Response functions. An appropriate valid Government driver's license is required May be required to work other than normal duty hours and tours of duty such as rotating shifts, overtime, evenings, weekends, call back, uncommon tours of duty and holidays to support (cont ) (cont'd ) reserve requirements and/or during exercises or contingency situations Must obtain Hazardous Material Operations certification This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption (cont ) (cont'd ) of all functions. This position requires incumbent to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program Attends and maintains competency and certification regarding the evaluation, management and monitoring of public health programs, Food safety, potable water system monitoring, (cont ) (cont'd ) and industrial respiratory protection and quantitative fit-testing (QNFT) gas mask programs to ensure compliance with local, state, federal and Air Force standards This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The employee is subject to random drug testing Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Clearance Qualifications Conditions of employment continued: A pre-employment physical is required for this position Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Environmental Health Technician Series 0698. (GS-06) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least (1) one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05 (or higher) or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience includes experience that involved identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full year of graduate level education. This education was obtained in an accredited college or university and my education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of an Environmental Health Technician. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker. Specialized experience includes ensuring food storage, preparation and serving procedures do not compromise the wholesomeness of products; conducting inspections of temporary living quarter of base lodging facilities; and performing routine visits to work areas to gather information on work areas to include personal protective equipment, personnel roster and job descriptions. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education. My education was obtained in an accredited college or university and my education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of an Environmental Health Technician. Specialized experience includes performing no notice, spot and special inspections of industrial facilities and shops, when new equipment is installed and when potential hazardous conditions exist. Performing surveillance inspections of stored subsistence and food service facilities, provide technical leadership and guidance to Food Service Managers on food storage and food service facility sanitation. Evaluating water supplies, waste disposal, insect and rodent control, and other environmental factors that determine acceptability of establishments supplying food for consumption. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B . or J.D., if related. My education was obtained in an accredited college or university and my education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of an Environmental Health Technician.
