About the role

The Staff Accountant role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the accounts payable process, and assisting with various accounting tasks to ensure the financial integrity of the UMass Amherst Foundation. This position plays a crucial role in the preparation of financial statements and compliance with accounting standards and Foundation policies.
The Staff Accountant position is classified as a non-exempt position, meaning that the position is eligible for overtime.
Location: This is a full-time hybrid position and is open to employees in select US states: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

What you'll do

Journal Entries and Revenue Accounting:

  • Prepare and book gift contribution revenue journal entries.
  • Ensure accurate recording and classification of gift contributions in financial records.

Accounts Payable:

  • Assist with the accounts payable process to ensure timely payment of invoices.
  • Gather appropriate authorizations for payments and verify the completeness of documentation.

Transaction Review and Compliance:

  • Review accounting transactions for accuracy and compliance with Foundation policies and procedures.
  • Identify and correct any discrepancies or errors.

Period-End Closings:

  • Assist the Controller with monthly, quarterly, and yearly closing processes.
  • Perform other basic accounting duties as required during closing periods.

Vendor Relations:

  • Respond promptly to vendor inquiries and resolve any issues.
  • Request and maintain W-9 forms and liability insurance documentation from vendors as applicable.

Annual Reporting:

  • Contribute to the preparation of annual 1099 forms for vendors.
  • Assist with the annual budget preparation under the guidance of senior management.

External Audit Support:

  • Assist in the preparation of support schedules and documentation required by external auditors during the year-end audit.

Other Duties:

  • UMAF is building and growing, and this position will support those efforts with other duties and projects as assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience. Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or Access and other web-based applications. May be required to produce complex documents, perform analysis, and maintain databases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to establish effective relationships with both internal and external audiences.
  • Driven, self-motivated, and goal oriented.
  • Highly organized, strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Proposed Annual Salary Range:
