Job Title: Senior Specialist, Optical Design Engineer Job Code: 15971 Job Location: Wilmington, MA Job Schedule: 9/80 Job Description: L3Harris has an immediate opening for a Senior Optical Engineer at our office in Wilmington, MA to provide optical design and analysis support for space-based telescope systems. Essential Functions and Skills: Support the development of optical technologies and architectural concepts to support the company's current and new business opportunities
Generate optical designs and perform analysis on advanced telescopes, calibrators, and unique optical test sets to meet project requirements and explore different optical trade spaces. Review system requirements and provide guidance to system engineering and program management.
Develop and analyze optical budgets and performance sensitivities, including wavefront error, MTF, line of sight, throughput, jitter, etc
Support optical component specification generation and review and provide optical modeling analysis, image simulation, and design/metrology support during system alignment, integration and testing. Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve project objectives, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team setting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to documenting processes, convey technical information, and facilitate effective teamwork.
Interface with customers and senior management.
Obtain security clearance.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
Experience with geometrical optics, imaging lens design, and optical component tolerancing.
Background in sequential optical design and analysis software (CODEV or ZEMAX).
Preferred Additional Skills: Active DoD Secret security clearance.
Background in telescope or remote sensing optical design for scientific or defense applications
Stray light analysis (FRED preferred)
Proficiency in physical optics modeling and analysis
Background in radiometry/photometry
Background in optical fabrication and testing
Athermalization of optical systems
MatLab or Python experience
Organized and detail-oriented
Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work harmoniously in a team environment with government customers and other contractors
