Position Summary:

In keeping with our organization's goal of improving the lives of the Residents we serve; the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) plays a critical role in providing superior customer service and nursing services to all Residents in the facility. The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in the planning, development and overall operation of the Nursing Department which ensures Residents receive quality care 24 hours a day.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the DON with planning, directing, and supervising the activities of the nursing staff.
  • Ensures the Nursing Department is compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Develop, implement and update department policy and procedures when necessary or as directed.
  • Assists with staffing to ensure Resident needs and regulatory requirements are met at all times.
  • Participates in Federal, State and Local agency annual surveys.
  • Reviews any deficiencies noted by government agencies during inspections and assists with the implementation of changes needed to correct any deficiencies found.
  • Completes annual performance reviews of all subordinate staff. Provides guidance and education to staff in regard to their performance and provides counseling and disciplinary action to subordinate staff members as needed.
  • Responsible for training and educating staff members.
  • Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are maintained at all times. Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies.
  • Reports all hazardous conditions, damaged equipment and supply issues to the appropriate persons.
  • Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of Residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment.
  • Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in Resident care areas.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines at all times and protects confidential information by only providing information on a need-to-know basis.
  • Assist with new admissions, re-admissions and assist with the transfer of Residents to different rooms within the facility.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with Residents, visitors, families, peers and supervisors.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services. Attends in-service and education programs and attends continuing education required for maintenance of professional certification or licensure.
  • Understands Infection Control and follows the Company's Infection Control guidelines, such as hand washing principles, understanding of isolation and standard precautions, recognizing signs and symptoms of infection, demonstrating and understanding of the process for identifying and handling infectious waste and cross contamination, maintaining personal hygiene, and complying with OSHA standards in the workplace.
  • Promotes and Protects Resident Rights by assisting Residents to make informed decisions, treating Residents with dignity and respect, protecting Residents' personal belongings, reporting suspected abuse or neglect, avoiding the need for physical restraints in accordance with current professional standards; and supporting independent expression, choice and decision-making consistent with applicable laws and regulations.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position directly supervises all nursing staff, including but not limited to: Certified Nurse Aides and Nurses (RNs and LPNs). Supervises employees in the department and others for whom they are administratively or professionally responsible by following policies and applicable laws. Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.


Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; scheduling, planning, assigning and directing work; receiving calls and finding replacements for absent staff; preparing performance evaluations; receiving and resolving employee complaints; monitoring and correcting job performance of employees; and disciplining employees up to and including discharge.


Requirements:

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Associates Degree in Science, Nursing or related field.
  • Graduate from and accredited nursing program.
  • Current State License as Registered Nurse.
  • CPR Certified.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a supervisory/ADON role preferred.
  • Knowledge of LARA Regulations, as well as State and Federal regulations preferred.


Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of general nursing principles and understanding of the concepts of aging and concerns of the elderly population and those with a health condition requiring post-acute clinical care intervention.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal health regulations and clinical standards of practice.
  • Knowledge of nursing standards and delivery systems, supervision, management, staff development, quality assurance and infection control practices.
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of nursing care and personnel performance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Displays positive professional image and enhances positive public relations for the facility.
  • Basic business computer knowledge preferred.
