JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist is a non-exempt hourly member of the Surgery Center team participating in its missions and values. The technologist provides safe quality patient care in the Operating Room as assigned. The tech also displays confidence, trust, and respect while working well within the OR team. Participation in the Center's convenient, cost-effective and quality-driven care is one of most important. Position is supervised by the Director of Nursing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Uses appropriate sterile and aseptic techniques to perform surgical scrub and O.R. assistance according to recommended practices, Center's policies and procedures and per physician orders.
Assembles required operative field instruments, equipment and supplies for room including mayo stands and back tables. Manages field assuring maintenance of sterility and asepsis as required.
Able to anticipate and prioritize OR team needs during procedures. Handles specimens appropriately per Center policies.
Provides proper instrument and equipment care including use and storage.
Prepares clean and contaminated instruments and supplies for transport to Decontamination area. Assist when needed in instrument, equipment and supply cleaning and preparation for sterilization.
Assist, when needed, in inventory control, next-day preparation, instrument counts and stocking of supplies for operating rooms.
Assist with maintaining and updating instrument sets, surgeon preference list and reusable sterile supply lists.
Adheres and assists in development of policies and procedures.
Attends and participates in continuing education programs, communication groups and staff meetings.
Complies with cost containment practices. Participates in quality assurance monitoring.
Observes all safety precautions and participates in processes meeting or exceeding regulatory and accreditation guidelines. Complies with health and safety rules and procedures at the Center.
Follows safety guidelines and uses required personal protective equipment.
Assumes other duties as assigned.
SKILLS and REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of accredited Surgical Technologist Program. If LPN, graduate of accredited school of practical nursing with MI licensure and BLS certification.
Certification is encouraged within one year of employment and is necessary for advancement within the clinical ladder.
One or more years demonstrated O.R. experience and skills with knowledge of accepted AORN standards and State Dept. of Health standards.
Demonstrated decision making and organizational skills. Change oriented and creative. Effective interpersonal skills including those required during stressful situations.
Will serve in patient care including patient movement or lifting, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Based on OSHA guidelines for exposure determination, this position falls within Category A - occupations that require procedures or other occupation related tasks that involve exposure or reasonably expected exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
